Do NOT get me started ....donation buttons.

I don't like them. I never have and I'm still trying to grasp the concept of them being on beauty blogs or You Tube Channels.

A few weeks ago I was trawling through some You Tube videos and I came across a popular you tuber who had a donation button on her page asking for people to give money towards a new laptop she wanted. Are you kidding me?!! Is this what the world has come to? Show me your favourite mascara and I'll pay for your new, spanking high spec laptop in return???! *refrains from swearing*

Sorry, nobody told me that saving your own money was last season.

I want a new laptop. In fact I want the OPI designed Dell Inspiron 17 in Louvre Me Louvre Me Not, but I'm not gonna stuck a button on my blog indirectly begging for your money to pay for it! Get outta here! Same goes for another You Tuber who has a blog which is full of nothing but copied and pasted press releases - why do you have a donation button? You don't even write anything!!

Ask your friends, family, go to the bank for an overdraft but don't get cheeky and ask people you don't even know to fund your wants or needs. If you can't afford the products you want to blog about then it's time to stop living beyond your means ...or get a job!

Rai said...

WTF!!! Um these fools get paid for making those videos!!! That's just being darn greedy.

I bet some dumb subscribers has donated though.
Who is this YouTuber, I want to know?! lol

Beautyjunkielondon said...

I can't believe that. It's You Tube, not a charity case! Have to credit that whoever it is at least has some balls to put something like that up there... quite cheeky!

VexInTheCity said...

@ Nefertari - I've only noticed the two I mentioned..and then a 3rd this morning. I hope they don't catch on!

My question is what are we donating to? Someone else to get someone new make when I have to pay for mine. All the products that I review on my blog I pay for and it's not cheap. I could never in a million years ask people to donate money so I can buy more stuff. I want a lot things but don't I think my readers should pay that. And that copy and paste blog I'm still trying to figure that one out. What is the point of coping and pasting things from other sites?

Listen Up!!!I want boob job a everything tuck and while we are at it can I get a butt lift? Donate now!

Emma said...

Haha I know who you mean - I couldn't believe it when I saw it. She mentioned doing it months ago but I didn't honestly think she'd do it!

I couldn't agree with you more - what bloody cheek?!

Louise said...

LOL Have you ever read a book called Save Karen - this woman got into loads of debt and set up a site so people could give her money and pay off her debt for her - and by god people gave er money - look it up it tells a lot of about people lol

VexInTheCity said...

@Vixxan - I agree with you!

@Emma - Quite!

@Beautyjunkielondon - I know! Very cheeky.

@Emma - I can't remember who it was - some American chick. I landed on her channel by chance weeks ago and clicked off just as quickly.

@Louise - No, but I THINK I know the woman you're talking about. I remember a woman being on the news a few yrs ago who had set upa site asking people to donate 1 cent each I think to pay off her debts or something and she cleared them and had a stupid amount of money left over! Did she give the money back? Like hell she did!!

Jo said...

:o no way do people put these buttons on their blog!!! Thats fuckin shocking (I had to swear it just came out) I started my blog for a hobby, Im a full time mum, my partner works and supports me and I needed something to focus on while Harveys little, up until he goes nursery then I can go back to work. Ive never once thought about asking to be paid for the crap I write, hell Im lucky enough my followers even follow me haha, let alone asking them to pay me for something I WANT to do and I ENJOY doing. Its not my job, its my friggin hobby!

People like that are gunna end up giving us genuine bloggers a bad name, soon enough everyone will think were only in it to get free stuff or money. If I ever see them buttons, no doubt Ill have something to say on their channel or blog.

Anyway rant over now. That was a nice release actualy ha!

WOW...Why does a beauty blogger need all that "donation"
Agreed bloggers need money for buying stuff and writing about it (if its a blog inclining towards business)...but paypal donations???
Can't digest....:)They beter use adsense to generate money....

Redz2486 said...

Totally agree with you Vex. It's quite frankly disgusting that someone has the nerve to ask other to donate towards buying herself a new laptop!

Wake and smell the roses dear, get a job! work hard for it like the rest of us!

I could give you a list a long as my arm for new stuff I would like but its either not going to happen or I'm going to save for it like any other normal person would.

Lu said...

Wow, I havn't seen any of those buttons yet but that's just cheeky! Pay for your own laptop whoever it is, pffft! x

Seriously ridiculous!! WTF?!!

Some people have alot of nerve.

Cake Girl said...

Just brilliant. Couldn't agree more?!?! I'm surprised whenever I see one - I mean, fair play if it's a chairty (registered, I may add), or using the money for a positive, pro-active campaign, but that does take the piss.

I love it when you vent! Keep it coming girl! xxx

Peonies and water lilies said...

I saw a donate button on a blog recently and I totally agree with what you've said, why should readers pay for something that you want?!?! x

VexInTheCity said...

@Jo - Let it out girl!

@Redz2486 - My point exactly, work for it yourself.

@Resham - Nobody forces us to start blogging. If you're going to blog, then don't ask people to keep you neck high in products funded with their money.

@Lu - I've only spotted them on a couple of blogs and one YT channel.

@Lipstick Rules - A lot of nerve ...!

@GWTGT - LOL

@Peonies & water illies (cute name btw!) I couldn't agree more.

@Cake Girl - Yeah, if it's for a charity or people who have set one up to help pay for somebody's medical bills or to support somebody in desperate need then of course I can understand and support its set up, but to keep somebody in lipgoss or fund their love of non-essential items?! Eff off!

Brandy said...

At first I thought it was a donation button for the needy but now that I know it's a donation for the blogger...W T F?

RoByn LaTice said...

I love how your followers show you soo much love! :) ! Anywho, i agree..it actually really works my nerves. i've seen them on a few blogs...a few meaning more than 10 which is ridiculous. And they all say the same thing " I need a new Laptop..please help me." WTF?!

Shifa said...

omg i know its shocking but i have seen beauty bloggers having such buttons on their blogs. i always wondered what they wanted donation for lol

Shangri-La said...

I just shouted out WTF after reading this! I can't believe people are that pathetic that they will add this to their blogs/youtube videos, how do they think everyone else in the world gets by?!

Computergirl said...

I jst read your text at the top right hand corner. Maybe you should have a donate button for that trip to NYC and 30 minute Sephora dash!!!??!!

Seriously though: I guess some people just have no concept of being cheeky. I would like to think that 'donations' are for a charitable cause- like Water Aid, Macmillan Nurses, Cancer Research,African orphans, earthquake victims, Women's refuge.... not to buy luxury items that we are very privilaged to get in this affluent country!

I can understand that people might try to build online businesses, but that is far from 'Donations'. I think I have seen the laptop lady you reference. Shame.

I blogged because I wanted to hold myself accountable in my quest to get spot free skin. It grew and I have made lots of friends. I'm too straight laced to ask my friends to donate to the 'computergirl' charity to buy me a new house! Just not on really is it!!

Great post. :) Emma x

Belle Du Jour said...

oh i know who you are talking about, funny thing is i quite like her videos. she is funny but yeah that is beyond ridiculous!! Actually its quite embarrassing that you are asking random people you dont know for money for things you can afford. It gives me a good chuckle about dignity...

anyway, funny post! xx

Sara (The Makeup Snob) said...

omg too funny! I am def on the same page as you! I guess I never really paid to much attention, but the idea of it is def bothersome.

last year i saw one blogger with it on her page aking for donations to send her to imats. you know imats is coming every year. u could have planned ur finances accordingly. lol.

The Beauty Thesis said...

Girl amen!!!! Why did a "guru" post one on her blog so she could go to IMATS and bring back information to her subs? Why was another guru suggesting we "donate" for a camera since we watch her videos? Another wants a Chanel bag for doing Blog Tv, and don't dare say anything to dissent elst you are a hater! :)

Dwana, (SME) Subject Matter Expert of S.O.S said...

Chile please, a while back a YouTuber did a video asking people to donate 20 phucking dollars toward a new camera. For their "contribution" a subscriber was given the opportunity to have a live chat with her. Wooow :2\ THEN her slow ass (the person that paid) got upset because she didn't talk enough and didn't see/ hear about the new camera. What!?! Your bad, dummy!

Anyone willing to "donate" money towards someone else hobby is...its just on them. I say get a damn job and stop playing on silly people loneliness. Some people are just so lonely/ pitiful, they are willing pay for "a relationship", some kind of connection, recognition, or some other BS. Someone like this has stalker tendencies. I said it and I'm not taking it back1

Its OK to admire but when you start taking things to the next level like giving money, sending gifts, making videos to show appreciation, doing response videos for MOST of the YTer...you get the point.

Ads are another thing. A person isn't directly asking for money. However I've seen one particular blogger/ popular YTer that will do a post solely on an ad. On some I bought/ like/ use this, click on this Amazon ad. You click, they get paid. Whenever I go to a bloggers page with ads I click on the interesting ones. HOWeva` if your doing post JUST for the click or have popups you can fa`get it!

The people asking have no shame to their game. For every person with their hand out there is a lonely person out there looking for recognition. smh

This post made me laugh, i totally agree with you! x

Amen. Preach sistah. I totally agree. It amazes me to see these "donate" buttons like they are working for some extraordinary cause. Smh in disgust. Won't see me donating a dime but I am surprised that some ppl find the nerve to do this!

Damn, being barred from blogger at work now means I am late to this party! Erm I agree with everyone that is nuts, I think some people are just pisstakers in all walks of life tho, so many people want something for nothing!

Louise: I was going to mention Karen Bosnak, I read her book and it was a very interesting read. Maybe this is where this came from. I am all for the motto if you don't ask you don't get but hey I won't be donating. As Yinka said if I was ever skint I would get a part time job, sell stuff on ebay or ask my family for a loan. Still different strokes and all that.

honestly, i am both shocked and disgusted! get the **** outta here with that! if I have to work my ass off at work to pay for my WANTS, then *****, so do you! SMDH!

You always give me joke. I am more curious than the cat and wanna know who this youtuber blogger is. dm me via twitter or email me via my contact on my blog

but seriously, They have never bothered me, just didnt realise people placed them on there for laptops etc. the Save Karen thing she cleared her debts and gave the surplus to charity, she has 2 books publushed

i know a youtuber and blogger who had camera problems and her subscribers asked her to put up a donation button so they could help her get a new cam. they insisted that much that she did. in those instances thats fine but just to support your hobbie begs a different a question

Lu said...

After saying i'd never seen one before earlier, i saw my first 1 today, coincidentally! It said she was broke and every little helps or something. Hmmm, thing is, she aint the only broke 1! xXx

you are so, so right! it's pretty cheeky of them!

The Home Spa Goddess said...

I see those and sometimes I do donate. Most people only ask for $1 -$2 anyway.

If someone is entertaining me or providing info I don't mind helping them out. I wouldn't fund their new laptop if I'm being asked but I have donated to some podcasters I listen to. Their are costs that go with hosting a show.

The podcast This Week In Tech gets thousands a month from the tip jar on their site. It's all in how its done.

You know that I feel the same way that you do. Blogging is a hobby for most, but for others it's big business. My biggest peeve though is the amount of money spent on cosmetics could probably equal the money that's being asked for the laptop. How about curb your spending and a laptop can be funded right out of your own pocket. LOL.

mizzworthy said...

OMG - Unbelievable! I never knew about this, but its disgusting! x

- Kay - said...

Omg I saw this blogger/youtuber with the laptop donation too! I couldn't believe it, but what was most shocking to me was that this person had all designer makeup and constantly flaunted her louis vuitton and iphones and etcetera...and then all of a sudden she wanted people to buy her a new laptop! I don't know if that's the same person you're talking about, this was months ago and exactly when I decided to stop reading her blog!
