NARS Orgasm Illuminator review + swatches

So, as seen in my previous post showcasing swatches of NARS Spring 2010 collection, I was also given a tube of the new NARS Orgasm Illuminator. To say I almost orgasmed on the spot when told I would be taking this home is an understatement. I almost passed out in excitement there and then!

This product has been hyped up something rotten over the past few weeks and I couldn't wait to get it home to see whether it lived up to the hype.

So, what are we looking at here?

What it is: A complexion enhancer that makes skin look instantly refreshed, radiant, and glowing.

What it does: NARS Orgasm Illuminator lights your skin from within! Deceptively sheer and decidedly luminous, it magically transforms lacklustre skin into a remember-me, luscious complexion. Flirt with foundation, go it alone, or go neck-and-neck with your décolleté. The effect is, well, orgasmic.

First impressions? When I swatched it on my hand during the demonstration evening, it left a beautiful shimmery, apricot glow but I have a fat, round face so I was dubious that I'd be able to create the same effect as seen on the models at New York Fashion Week as I don't have obvious cheekbones for the illuminator to settle on.

Using this isn't supposed to be an ordeal, it's meant to be so effortless that you don't even need a mirror. Hmm I wouldn't go that far. I find that if you don't blend it properly, you're left with a bit of a line which shows under the light so you do need to take some care when applying it.

Since writing this, I've used my MAC 187 brush to apply it, and actually preferred using it to my fingers, only because I'm not a fan of getting make up on my fingers unless necessary. It has a sheer, thin lotion-type consistency (veeeery similar, if not the same as the MAC Lustre Drops formulation from Style Warriors) and doesn't dry too quickly so gives you plenty of time to work with it. My main problem with this, is that it doesn't contain a lot of pigment and gives a very sheer wash of shimmer, hence why I need about 3-4 layers until I'm reasonably happy with the effect.

If you're going to use your fingers to apply it, then I would suggest patting it on as opposed to rubbing it in as you can end up rubbing away the concentration of shimmer and it's sheer enough as it is. Also, build it up slowly rather than whacking a gloop of it on your face. When I've applied the first layer, I apply the second when the first is almost dry and repeat until I'm satisfied with the effect I have. I don't spread it across my entire cheek, just at the top of my blusher. You can apply it on your brow bone, décolleté, wherever catches the light.

Hmm you can probably see the sheen of it more in the 2nd picture than the first...or maybe you can't! Worn on top of MAC Fleur Power blush.

I wore it again yesterday and three people asked what I was wearing,, so something must be showing up! When I got home around 10:30pm, upon close inspection in the mirror, there was still a fair amount left on my cheeks and this was after cupping my face in my hand on numerous occasions throughout the day and evening, so its staying power is quite good.

However, I'm still a bit disappointed. One one hand I like it, I know the shimmery effect is there cos I've seen it on my hand, and people have complimented it, but once I apply it to my face, I just don't think it's visible which frustrates me!

I don't dislike it, and am still glad I have it, but it doesn't have the "Wow" factor that I hoped it would have for me. NARS Albatross on the other hand...now you're talking! I get a real glow from this which shows up with barely any effort and you only need the teeniest amount to get the ball rolling. If you find you don't get on with the Illuminator, and haven't tried Albatross, then don't despair and try that instead. Albatross loves everybody, no matter the skintone! Speaking of skintone, check out Lipglossiping for swatches of the Orgasm Illuminator on Caucasian skin.

As I've previously mentioned, the NARS Orgasm Illuminator will be released as a Space NK exclusive on Feb 18th and then nationwide at NARS counters and online on March 1st.

Price: £21

Have you tried it yet? What do you think? Planning on buying it? Opinions please!

I was really thinking about getting this but I'm not sure... It seems pretty similar to MAC Strobe Liquid but a different colour so I probably don't need it, we'll see!!

Think this looks amazing on you, but I think it might look a bit strange on my very pale skin - swatching may be needed lol x

i think it looks amazing. It's not supposed to be a true blush I guess. I am so super jealous you got some to take home. I'll be definitely heading to sephora soon to get my hands on it! :)

The sheen is lovely, just not sure I 'd want a product that it would take me 5 mins on it's own to apply...
Great post!!!
Now off to check lipglossiping's post!

Looks great on you! I got a sample of this and I'm wearing it today. I had the same reaction as you though when I looked in the mirror: "Where is it?" Of course I only put 1 layer of it.. maybe that's why.

I think I'll check out Albatross too. :)

Cute review. I did one too on my blog and mentioned how I thought it would look great on my skin, as soon as I am a little (faux) tanner than a white sheet of paper. It looks STUNNING on you! Your skin is beautiful.
