Racy promo pic with a heart stopping price to match?

The new Tom Ford lipsticks hit counters last week with a delightful price tag of £35 a pop.

When I first informed of their price tag from London MakeUp Girl, I let out a gasp and it wasn't of the orgasmic kind I can tell ya!

I'll be the first to hold my hand up and admit spending what some will consider obscene amounts on make up all in the name of vanity and obsession, but I just can't bring myself to part with £35 for a lippie. It's just not that serious. However I'd think nothing of spending £35 if I had at least five lipsticks to show for it!

Yeah, they look cute with the 'TF' stamp on the top and extravagant casing, the promo pic does its best to entice me, but doesn't leave me in such a daze that I feel the need to skip merrily down to Selfridges and part with three thousand and five hundred pennies for a lipstick.

So how much is too much? Where do you draw the line in your quest for the perfect lipstick, or any other cosmetic product for that matter? We all know that 'expensive' doesn't necessarily always mean better quality. Creme de la Mer face cream costs £530 for just 250ml, even though the ingredients allegedly cost just £25 and that has done little to deter its loyal fans.
Will you be paying a visit to the Tom Ford counter any time soon?

jeeeeze louise! £35!? I find that expensive for a foundation at times, nevermind a lippie! xx

MacJunkie09 said...

oh lord £35 for a lippie,i felt sick reading that!
I would hope it would so something amazing for £35 but i really doubt that would be the case!
I think there has to be a line,as much as we love make up and the feeling it can give us,we need to remember it is just that...make up. Nothing more nothing less! xx

I paid £21 today for a Chanel. I'd stop at £25 I think. I hate when make up is extortionate. It's like i want one of the Guerlain bronzers but at £45 i wouldn't even contemplate it :(

could not agree more!
i struggle to accept paying £20 for the YSL ones
and i hate to nit pick
but three hundred and fifty pence is £3.50, not £35
:S sorry
xx

but then, maybe you own a nars and a mac lipgloss that you never wear - that totals to nearly £35, what if you were to wear this lipstick every other day?

food for thought :) xxx

@Peachykeencheeks - Yeah, me too.

@MacJunkie09 - Yeah I doubt they're that great that the price can be justified. You're paying for the name, that's it really IMO.

@Legseleven7 - Guerlain makes my eyes water LOL

@AbbieandBrian - Thank you for pointing out my numerical discrepancy (smartarse!) LOL xx

Jeweled Thumb said...

Wow, £35 is extreme. I try not to spend more than $20 on a lipstick. Thanks to sales and such I usually succeed, though I do have a few Chanel glosses.

amber_j said...

You probably don't want to know about the prices for the new Serge Lutens makeup line then...

VexintheCity said...

City Girls Fashion Box - I see your point..I still couldn't hand over £35 for it though LOL

@Jeweled Thumb - I'd need to be getting a discount on it ..or spending somebody else's money! LOL

530 quid! :O *gasps in utter shock*

I would spend a max of 20 quid for a lippy to the most, coz at the end of a day it is going to fade away in a few hours

I couldn't agree more with the previous comments, but something tells me that these lipsticks won't be hard to sell to a certain group of fashion lovers/victims, whatever the "tag". As anyone working in the fashion/beauty trade knows, there's a certain type of client for every single product.

neither could i lol! xxx

I bought one as a birthday treat but I don't really obsess over cosmetics like this. I like them but i'm not daft enough to throw away my money to make my face look good when the rest of me looks an utter state.

But in this case I did make a frivolous allowance - more in the name of 'it's my birthday and I will buy it if i want to!'

Rouge Volupte was the most ££ it gets for me.. I like the look of these but to be honest they are NOTHING special color or texture wise!! Not for me!

Kelly said...

I personally would never pay that much for one lipstick. An eyeshadow palette yes, but not one lipstick!!

VexintheCity said...

@cbsg5861 - Interesting point! LOL

@Saskia the Salsa Fairy - LOL! Yeah, you're not as 'obsessed' as some of us so I guess it's not gonna lost in a sea of lipsticks! On a serious note though, how does it compare to other lippies you have?

Saskia the Salsa Fairy said...

I haven't even tried it yet lol! maybe tomorrow - will keep you posted x

Lydia said...

Hell no! I'd never ever spend that much on 1 lipstick! No matter how good that is. It is just not fair to the customers' intelligence!!!

Plus, the promo image is so "sexploitation"-like ahahah

VexintheCity said...

@amber_j - I've seen them LOL

@Get Gawjus - Hmmm I've never understand that Creme de le Mer hype lol

@Tali - Yeah, they do look nice, but I rarely get enough wear out of the lippies I DO have.

@Kelly - Yeah I'd pay that for an e/s palette too.

@Saskia the Salsa Fairy - LOL okies :-)

I have to say the quality isn't the greatest, I tried black orchid and it horrible, it was even pigmented, and just grease!!

carinaeletoile said...

*faints* That's 53USD at today's exchange rate.

I love lipsticks and glosses as much as the next girl and the most I've paid for a lippie was for 2 Diors. I cried a little, but it was worth it to me.

I love Tom Ford, but that is just way too excessive. I'll yell it the way I do when hubby bought his darn iPad: DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH NAIL POLISH I COULD BUY WITH THAT?! :)

well, i was in selfridges shopping , and i saw it ... i couldn't resist to get it .... but to think about it ... maybe it was a waste of money it is just lipstick ad i just get sucked into it ..... im not sure if there is huge difference between the tf and a mac one or a drugstore one for that matter

I've spent up to $50 on a blush, but decided it was not so special in the end. I learned my lesson. I won't pay more than $30+ for a lipstick. I think there's great stuff out there for $30 and under, and no shade is worth it. I always use lip balm under lipstick anyway, and I don't feel a lipstick can top that.

Sarah from IHeartCosmetics said...

I saw them in Selfridges yesterday, after I realised the price I just walked out, I'd rather buy another foundation to be honest I like lippie, but not THAT much!

SilhouetteScreams said...

I would never spend that much on a lipstick :| I can't even bear to part with $35AUD for the MAC Australia lipstick pricing!

Helen (Nice Things) said...

For £35 I'd expect to get Tom Ford in a bag to take away as well.

I'd probably spend it. But not on an internet order or blogger recommendation - I'd want to see them in the flesh and test them out myself first.

OOT...have you gone to buy topshop make up

If it's that much there then it's high here too. I think that is too much for a lipstick -- even for a lipstick lover like me...What can they possibly do to it that would make it that much????

madame b fatale said...

It's too much, I could just imagine how much it would be here!

tina_mbc said...

Agreed. Maybe for another type of product, like a blush or bronzer or a palette I would. But not for a lipstick.
And honestly, I think they could have done better with the packaging...

Sorry Tom, love ya tho! :)

stells and co. said...

Wow, that's very expensive! I wonder how much it would be in Canadian dollars? Love your blog BTW.

Jamilla Camel said...

OK, I got 1 as a gift, and bought the Dusk Pink for myself. I LOVE THESE LIPPIES!

However, I baulk at paying for Cle de Peau lipsticks, which are even more expensive!
