Guest Review: Origins Youthtopia SP15 firming foundation with Rhodiola and foundation brush

Sunday, May 30, 2010

A while ago I asked Nicola, fellow blogger and writer of NicolaVC86, if she'd be ever so kind to help me review a couple of Origins products. She obliged, and here's what she had to say about them.

"I recently got the chance to try out the new Origins Youthtopia foundation & foundation brush, so here are my thoughts on the two products;

The new Youthtopia foundation by Origins is ‘clinically proven to improve the look of imperfections and soften lines and wrinkles, with the mix of youth-boosting skincare and makeup, skin looks firmer and more resilient. Worn over time, the skin becomes measurably more younger looking due to the patented Rohdiola rosea anti aging technology as well as collaging boosting soy peptides.’

Now all the technical details are dealt with we can get into the good stuff - what this foundation can do. First of all this is a light to medium coverage which can be buildable if needed but even with a small amount it almost blurs your face and you don’t notice flaws at all if that makes sense, if you choose to go for a fuller coverage you really don’t look like you’re wearing much at all, I do still use concealer with the foundation under my eyes but it covers dark spots & imperfections, nothing can tackle my dark circles.

It almost turns to a powder finish once it sets on your skin but gives you such radiance; it really is a beautiful finish. I found it best to apply over a primer (which I do with all foundations) & with the fingers, it allows the product to warm up nicely and blend much more naturally than a brush. The lasting power of this foundation is up to 10 hours on me with a setting powder & I have oily/combination skin which I’d say is pretty good performance.

The packaging is a very standard bottle which could benefit from a pump as it’s so runny, you can end up with too much of the product coming out. Priced at £24 for 30mls, it isn’t exactly cheap but I personally would buy this. If you didn’t get along with the Nars Sheer Glow I would try this as it is very similar if sheer glow broke you out, which incidentally this didn’t but then again nothing ever does apart from fake tan & Mac charged water. Even though I do love my sheer glow I will be purchasing a bottle of this when it is finished as I am very impressed.

As for the foundation brush, my advice is really don’t waste your money, when I received it in the post I assumed it would come with the foundation or be £5 maximum, its £17. I nearly chocked on my chocolate bar. It is so cheaply made, the hair is so stiff even after I gave it a good wash, the Ferrell is made from such a cheap ‘metal’ ( I’m doubting it is even metal maybe a glorified plastic) you could easily dent it & the handle is just the same. Altogether a shocking brush, applied my foundation horribly and an epic fail from Origins. If you are determined to use a foundation brush which personally I don’t, spend another £8 & get a MAC one.

All about balance one great review & one not so great, but I saw they made other brushes which look nice on the site but having experienced this brush I’m hesitant & hopefully made you the same, I don’t like people wasting money, I’m actually surprised Origins released such a poor product as I have loved everything I’ve ever tried from them."

This is available in eight shades and retails for £24.00.

Any Origins fans out there?

Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams + swatches

Saturday, May 29, 2010

My recent love for Make Up For Ever products shows no sign of coming to a halt any time soon. I've tried a few products from the line, my favourite being Full Cover concealer and more recently their HD blushes. However, I'm still on the fence regarding the HD foundation. Two years on some days I like it and others I loathe it. Meh.

Anyway the latest offering from the cosmetic powerhouse comes in the form of Aqua Creams, a collection of versatile waterproof colours that can be worn on the eyes, lips and cheeks.

Available in 21 shades, these have been created to resist smudging, creasing, sweat and tears! Perfect timing if recent weather is anything to go by.

The day I've been waiting for ...

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Ever since it announced that there was to be a sequel to the Sex and the City movie, I've had a permanent countdown ticking in my head.

My wait is finally over and tonight I shall be running to the cinema to get the best seat in the house. I hope I don't combust in excitement before I get there cos right now I feel how a six year old does on Christmas Eve! Tissues shall be in my handbag too, just in case ...I don't wanna get caught out like I was when watching the first film!

To those who have grown to loathe the SATC circus that has whipped half the female population into a frenzy, if you have the chance to see the film just enjoy it for what is -  fun, ridiculous, glamourous, over the top antics of four attractive women in sexy New York - you never know you might even enjoy it! ;-)

To those of you who saw the midnight viewings last night, no spoilers in the comments please! I'm currently stateside at the moment, so it won't be too hard to take an internal flight to track you down!!

SATC fans are your tickets booked?? Whoo-hooo!

Hop on the Elemis SpaBus!

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Believe it or not, Elemis have been spoiling us with their skincare treats for 20 years and have decided to take its award winning products to the people with the "Treatments on Tour" SpaBus, whilst also raising money to help vunerable children through the Mothers4Children charity.

The 20th anniversary nationwide tour kicked off last week and is an eye catching royal blue, so you can't miss it. Whilst waving the Union Jack, it will also be offering five unique and luxurious 15 minute face and body spa-therapies on the upper and lower decks which are fully fitted with spa interiors. Treatments will cost just £10 - performed by one of the 'Elemis Angels', and on you while you're fully clothed. Choose from a Skin Booster Facial to a Re-Charge Power Back Massage.

Elemis aim to raise over £50,000 for the Mothers4Children charity by donating £1 from each treatment and skincare kit sold. They're aiming high, planning to see 30,000 during the nationwide campaign and perform one hundred therapies a day.

You can help them reach their target by popping along to the bus when it hits your town. Check out the SpaBus schedule or follow them on Twitter to see where they're heading next.

Kylie reveals her beauty secret ...

Sunday, May 23, 2010

...but do you believe her?

At forty one years old (she turns forty two on Friday), there's no denying that Kylie Minogue looks fantastic for her age and regularly puts women half her age to shame as she tops 'Sexiest Woman' polls in lads mag galore. She's now strenuously denied resorting to the surgeons knife to maintain the looks that have seen her grace numerous magazine covers over the past two decades and claims she relies on no other than skincare classic Ponds Cold Cream to keep her looking gorgeous.

Whilst admitting that she's been a regular user of botox in the past, she's adamant that she won't use it again. Being the cynic that I am, I wasn't convinced that her youthful looks were entirely down to a pot of £3 face cream. I'm not questioning the properties of Ponds Cold Cream, it's a cult product that is evidently popular amongst thousands of women for a reason. The angle I'm viewing this from is that with Kylie once being an avid botox user, I question just how much credit for her skin goes to Ponds.

I did a bit of research and discovered that if you have repeated botox injections, the effects tend to last longer than than the 4-6 months they're supposed to. Repeatedly freezing the muscle will slowly weaken it, making it thin. This creates less resistance to the freezing making the treatments last longer.

Somehow I doubt this will have any effect on the number of pots sold from today onwards as women worldwide rush to grab this pocket friendly moisturiser. Kerching! Ponds have just hit the jackpot!

How many magazines do you want to bet will feature Ponds Cold Cream, alongside Kylie's crease-free face over the next month?

The Make Up Show NYC 2010 - in pictures.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

As some of you know, I went to to The Make Up Show in New York for the first time, last weekend. It was celebrating it's fifth anniversary and was similar to the IMATS in the sense that some of the brands I had seen at the London show in January were present.

I got there early, arriving just before 9am and met a couple of bloggers who were already in line. The biggest difference of the two trade shows was how organised it was. I was very impressed with how efficient the organisers and security staff were. There were no disgruntled faces or 2 mile queues of people waiting to pick up tickets weaving all over the place blocking entrances and exits as there were at The London IMATS.

It was another gorgeous sunny day in NYC!

The new OCC lip tar shades

I swear everybody rushed over to Make Up For Ever as soon as the doors opened! 40% off was not to be sniffed at! The HD blushes, foundations and new aqua creams flew off the shelves.
Crown Brushes - the calm before the storm!

My last guest post over on Zuneta is finally live, so please come and check it out and let me know what you think by commenting.

This week it's focusing on the BECCA Skin Perfecting Make Up System and I've been testing its tinted moisturiser, foundation and pressed powder.

Wanna know if I love this as much as I do the other products that I've tested and purchased? Then check it out here.

OPI Shrek Forever After

Sunday, May 23, 2010

Like many, I love the Shrek films and I'm looking forward to seeing Shrek 4. I was bemused to see that OPI were already on the ball and had already released a collection in its honour.

Whilst I won't be running to purchase any of the shades myself (although Who the Shrek are You does look kinda cool), I thought these swatches from All Lacquered Up  and Addicted to all things Pretty would be handy for those who want to channel their inner-ogre!

Sleek Circus Palette - Swatches

Saturday, May 22, 2010

The new Sleek Circus palette (yes, there's another one) will be hitting Superdrug stores next month and after attending the Sleek event held a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to bring one home with me.

Containing a mixture of shimmer and matte shades, the Circus palette is the second Sleek palette to stray away from the traditional black casing that we're used to, and comes in bright red plastic packaging to follow through on the circus theme.

Guest Review: Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup

Friday, May 21, 2010

A few weeks ago I was sent as a sample of the new Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup (in the wrong shade). A number of you offered your services to road test it for me and Lucy, writer of Beauty and the Blogger, was randomly chosen to put it through its paces and see how it performed . Here, she shares her thoughts on it.

"My skin has been so dire lately that I was pleased to find out that I’d been picked  to review this foundation.

It has a strange chemically smell (which I put down to the spot-fighting ingredients) and, quite a cakey look  on me once applied – it definitely highlights any dry areas on your skin though it’s actually aimed at oily skin so it’s probably not really for my skin type.

It gave good coverage (covered everything I needed to) and lasted for a good 9 hours without needing to be reapplied.  Despite the cakiness around my nose this foundation made me look fresh and awake and didn’t need powder or anything over the top. I’m not sure if this foundation has SPF in it, I’m tempted to think not as I can’t find anything that refers to SPF about it, it is oil-free though.

I had to give up after a week as I really really felt it was drying my skin out too much.  It didn’t do much in terms of reducing the number of spots I have but it definitely did dry them out quicker,  it didn’t reduce redness or soreness or anything like that though.

Overall, this foundation wasn’t the right one for me but if you have oily or very oily skin and break out as a result, I think this would be the foundation for you – good coverage, oil-fighting and dries up blemishes".

For more information on this foundation, check it out on the Clinique website.

MAC does Disney - Venomous Villains

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Having skipped the last couple of MAC collections (just hurry up and release In the Groove already!), I haven't been too fussed about MAC's latest offerings.

Today after months of speculation, the news that MAC is joining forces with Disney to create the Venomous Villains collection was confirmed. Hitting stores in September, the collection will feature four Disney 'villains' - including Cruella de Vil and will include lipstick, powder, lipgloss and blush (what, no eye shadows?).

Now whilst I'm not convulsing in excitement (all body jerking is currently being reserved for SATC2), watching the teaser trailer did bring a smile to my face. It kinda reminds me of the kind of adverts Alton Towers release for a spooky new ride.

What do you think? Will this collection bring out the big kid in you or does the thought of carrying make up adorned in cartoon characters leave you more than a little unimpressed?

The Make Up Show NYC - Blogger Preview

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I'm taking advantage of the fact that it's pissing down with rain outside, and so I'm doing a quick post as I'm not leaving the house until it's stopped!

The Make Up Show New York ended yesterday after two days of hectic make up madness, for both industry professionals and consumers alike and it was a fab experience, which I'm only just recovering from - and to think I only attended one day!

On Saturday afternoon, I met up with Adina from Krasey Beauty (who's just as lovely in person, as I'd imagined her to be) and we attended a bloggers preview event (it was like a bloggers convention - pretty surreal) hosted by James Vincent, Director of Artistry for The Make Up Show. We were all given a sneek preview of some of the new products that brands present at the show would be unveiling and promoting during the two day event.

Kevin J Bennett from Make Up For Ever also made a quick appearance in which he sang the praises of their HD blushes and new Aqua Creams.

The Makeup Show celebrated its fifth birthday and was promised to be bigger and better than ever. Obviously this was my first time attending, so I was excited to see what was in store, but even more excited to meet so many of the U.S beauty bloggers whose blogs I read regularly and who I banter with on Twitter. I met so many bloggers, it was so cool!

Some of the products and brands highlighted during the blogger preview were:

Pic courtesy of Krasey Beauty, as I was so distracted by the game of "Name that blogger" that I was playing in my head, that I forgot to snap the loot!

Inglot
Armour Beauty Lipglosses
Smashbox HALO Powder in yellow
Three Custom Color - their new lipsticks
K.O (Knock Out Cosmetics) Flatte Matte Nail Polishes
Make Up For Ever's HD blushes and aqua creams

More to come shortly ...

Calling all SATC fans!

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I dunno about you but I am counting the days down 'til May 27th when SATC2 is released here in the U.S

I've already booked my tickets to go and see it on opening night (eager much!)

If you're a fan of the show and based in the UK then keep your eye on my blog ...all shall be revealed very shortly...

Oh typical..I bloody missed it!

Thursday, May 13, 2010

I'm not around at the moment so my blog has all but come to a halt but I'll update as and when I get a chance - probably when I'm being ignored by the beau in favour for the play-offs. In my haste to pack my suitcase and get the hell out of here, I actually missed my blogiversary!! I may as well just jump off Brooklyn Bridge now!

I'm 6 days too late, which has ruined my plans for a fifteen paragraph Oscar style speech telling you all that I love you and wake up in the morning for the sole purpose of updating my blog!

On a serious note though, thank you for all the support so many of you have shown towards Vex in the City over the past year. Beauty blogging has changed a LOT since I joined in on the fun, but Twitter bitchiness, jealousy and PR related drama aside (Ahhh there's nothing quite like the world of beauty blogging - and a lot of you know EXACTLY what I mean by that!), I like to think that those of you who read my blog regularly do so because you enjoy it - nothing more, nothing less.

I'm truly thankful for the interaction so many of you go out of your way to have with me on my posts. Your comments really do make the swatching, editing, watermarking and uploading worthwhile and I know dozens of you know just how time consuming, not to mention brain numbing that can be!

Oh I must give a little mention to the haters too, it's all love traffic, so keep clicking back for a sneaky read - I see you, even though you'd rather swallow razor blades than admit that your bitch asses click to see what I'm writing about!!

I'll be holding a belated blogiversay giveaway when I get back, so if you know what's good for you, you better follow my blog now (if you're not already) and save me the trouble of telling you to later! With Sephora 15 mins away and discounts galore for my taking at The Makeup Show NYC this weekend, there'll be some much desired beauty goodies in the mix!

Thanks again to all my lovely readers! Let's see if I can do this for another year!

Topshop Make Up buys + swatches

Saturday, May 08, 2010

I had another peek at the new Topshop make up line on Wednesday and decided to go back and pick up the items that had caught my eye the most, this afternoon.

I like the look of some of the lipglosses (shades Heatwave and Pulp in particular) because I'm surprised at how pigmented they are as I thought they'd be quite sheer. I'll pick those up at a later date though.

In the end I decided on a cream brush which is part of the perm line and an eyeshadow from the Spring/Summer Trend collection.

I love the texture of the cream blushes which leave a dewy look and are easy to blend. Their texture is reminiscent (not entirely the same, but similar) of the MAC blushcremes in the Mac in Lillyland collection and are easy to blend into the skin. The only shade to really catch my eye was Crushed Berry (£6), which is a gorgeous, bright berry pink which I think is a must have for darker skintones.

You can see how dewy it is in the picture

I bought Sunstar (£8) as I liked the shades in this baked eyeshadow trio (doesn't it remind you of the MAC eyeshadows in last summer's Colour Craft collection?), which I think compliment one another well and again I think it's a winner for dark skintones.

You can use this wet or dry and the pigment is pretty decent when used dry, so I'll expect it to be even more intense when used wet. One thing that surprised me is that when I wiped off the blue shadow, it showed up on the wet wipe I had used as black! That freaked me out a bit - but I guess it's just a black based blue eyeshadow. No biggie.

The Topshop make up line seems to be a big success so far. The stands in Topshop, Oxford Circus have been buzzing with customers on both occasions I've been there and I think they've come up trumps with providing such an affordable range with shades to entice everybody. I'm still surprised that it's so cheap (the range is priced from £4-£15), considering how overpriced their clothes are these days!

Have you tried anything from the range yet? Do you think it's a hit or miss?

Make Up For Ever HD Blushes and swatches

Thursday, May 06, 2010

Move over MAC Ripe Peach, I've acquired new (yes more) blushes and these are my new favourites!

After reading a mass of reviews on the MUFE HD cream blushes I persuaded myself that these would improve my quality of life and added two shades that I've since had my heart set on, to my wishlist.

Gossmakeupartist made me a very happy blogger two nights ago when he listed a load of HD blushes for sale (he still has HD foundations available btw) and I managed to snap up my wishlist shades at a fraction of the RRP! There's NO blog sale like a Goss sale!

Anyway, they arrived today and I'm not disappointed!

Guest reviewer needed: Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions

Thursday, May 06, 2010

Hey, hey, hey! (sorry, I'm just a teeny bit hyper today, blame the Sleek Makeup staff for that)

Anyway the wrong shade's been sent to me, so this is where one of you steps in. I have one bottle in shade 03 Neutral available for testing and will need an accompanying review, detailing your thoughts (good and bad) on it. This will be featured on my blog.

I'll be picking somebody tomorrow at 8pm (GMT) and sending it out to you on either Saturday or Monday.

How much is too much?

Racy promo pic with a heart stopping price to match?

The new Tom Ford lipsticks hit counters last week with a delightful price tag of £35 a pop.

When I first informed of their price tag from London MakeUp Girl, I let out a gasp and it wasn't of the orgasmic kind I can tell ya!

I'll be the first to hold my hand up and admit spending what some will consider obscene amounts on make up all in the name of vanity and obsession, but I just can't bring myself to part with £35 for a lippie. It's just not that serious. However I'd think nothing of spending £35 if I had at least five lipsticks to show for it!

Yeah, they look cute with the 'TF' stamp on the top and extravagant casing, the promo pic does its best to entice me, but doesn't leave me in such a daze that I feel the need to skip merrily down to Selfridges and part with three thousand and five hundred pennies for a lipstick.

So how much is too much? Where do you draw the line in your quest for the perfect lipstick, or any other cosmetic product for that matter? We all know that 'expensive' doesn't necessarily always mean better quality. Creme de la Mer face cream costs £530 for just 250ml, even though the ingredients allegedly cost just £25 and that has done little to deter its loyal fans.
Will you be paying a visit to the Tom Ford counter any time soon?
