Review: Bobbi Brown SPF25 Tinted Moisturing Balm

Monday, September 27, 2010

What it says on the Bobbi Brown website: A lightweight foundation alternative for dry, dehydrated skin, this formula is ultra-rich, and blends easily, giving skin a dewy look with light coverage. SPF 25 helps protect skin against damaging UVA/B rays. Dermatologist tested.

To use: Apply to clean, dry skin in place of regular moisturiser. Dot on forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin and lightly blend with the foundation brush.

Whilst looking through my stash of never ending products, I came across this which I've been meaning to review for months!

On the whole my skin isn't typically dry or outright dehydrated, but it has its moments and so I thought I'd give this a go. I was sceptical about skipping my moisturiser the very first time I used this and applied it as normal. My face resembled an oil slick within an hour! I recall having to blot numerous times and so decided to follow the instructions and skip my moisturiser when using it next.

I've had better results with the Tinted Moisturising Balm when I've skipped moisturiser and surprisingly each time I use it, my skin doesn't miss it. There appears to be enough moisture in this balm (perhaps down to the shea butter and glycerin that it contains) to see my skin through the day and I don't suffer from any dryness as a result of applying it directly to my face after using a toner. I do however, feel that this is a little too greasy for my liking - probably because my skin isn't dry or dehydrated enough!

The packaging is simple and portable, however in a worst case scenario, I can envisage myself accidentally dropping the glass jar on a hard floor and it either smashing or flinging its contents across the floor. I'd prefer it if this came in a tube or pump bottle.

 Formulated with:
    • Glycerin, Shea Butter and Squalane deeply moisturize skin. • Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) and Carrot Extract help reduce the appearance of fine lines.  • Angelica Seed and Chamomile Oil soothe and calm skin.

OPI - The Burlesque Collection

Saturday, September 25, 2010

I had a quick glance at these a couple of months ago and didn't realise at the time that I was staring at the new OPI collection, being released for Christmas 2010. The Burlesque collection is inspired by the upcoming film of the same name, starring Christina Aguilera and Cher.

There are 12 shades, six shimmers and six glitters which which land on shelves in October

Top Row (L-R)

1. Shimmer and Glimmer - A glitter bit of blue
2. Show It & Glow It - Flaunt this pink glitter
3. Sparkle-iscious - Multi-colour glitter-liciousness!
4 Let Me Entertain You - Multi-talented fuchsia glimmer
5. Ali's Big Break - A glowing red shimmer
6. Tease-y Does It - A tempting burgundy shimmer

Bottom Row (L-R)

1. Bring On the Bling - A gold glitter that's beyond dazzling
2. Glow Up Already! - A glittering green
3. Extra-va-vaganza! - This orange glitter is not for the shy
4. Rising Star - Lustrous glimmering gold
5. The Show Must Go On - Deep pink shimmer

I had a look through the dozens of pictures stashed on my laptop and came across these pictures (I knew I'd papped something OPI related that day) which show how some of the shades 'look in real life'.

I'm not a huge fan of glitter polishes, simply because I don't find them the easiest formula to take off when I fancy a polish change. Still, some of these shades do look pretty and I'm curious to see what Tease-y Does It (A tempting burgundy shimmer) looks like though, so I'll be keeping an eye on nail blogs for swatches.

These polishes were made for the festive season, where glitter and shimmer is heartily indulged in and worn morning, noon and night by some individuals.

You can find the OPI Burlesque collection at for £9.95 each

Something For The Weekend - Win DKNY Be Delicious EDT!

Saturday, September 25, 2010

If you're a fan of Donna Karan's fragrances, no doubt you remember five years ago, DKNY took the beloved apple – the universal symbol of seduction as well as the icon of New York City - and bottled the essence of it in her scent, DKNY Be Delicious.

In celebration of the 5th anniversary of the classic DKNY fragrance, this October sees the launch of the brand new DKNY Be Delicious Eau de Toilette Spray. It is everything current fans love about Be Delicious only lighter, brighter and more refreshing. The juicy American apple note, a natural extract, is surrounded by the crisp green wetness of grapefruit and magnolia. At the heart lies tuberose, white muget, rose and shining violet; finished with smooth sandalwood, blond woods and white amber.

Sounds quite nice huh? Well if you'd like to win a 100ml bottle then answer this simple question:

Which anniversary is DKNY celebrating of its original Be Delicious fragrance?
a) 2 years
b) 10 years
c) 5 years

Models Own Vs Chanel (again)

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Models Own have done it again and come up with chic and affordable dupes to rival the current 'must have' shades from the Chanel Les Khakis de Chanel collection.

Due for release at Boots stores in October 2010, Models Own have created three brand new shades - Grace Green, a mossy pastel green; Becca's Brown, a dusky beige hue and Purple Ash, a vintage dusky rose. They've even cheekily named them "The Car Key Collection" (Geddit?)

For £5 a pop, they're a good alternative if you want the latest nail shades, but can't quite bring yourself to succumb to the indulgent £19 Chanel price tag.

Phillip Kingsley - Moisture Extreme

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

I was asked last Wednesday if I'd like to try the new Moisture Extreme line, specifically aimed at all variations of ethnic hair and created by the 'hair doctor' Phillip Kingsley. By sheer coincidence I was planning to take my braids out on Friday night with the intention of washing it on Saturday so I was only too pleased to give it a try as Phillip Kingsley and his products are well placed in the tricology world and I was curious to see how these new products would work on the very hair they were made for.

Moisture Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner duo as mentioned, has been developed specifically for all varieties of ethnic textured hair, and provides afro, Hispanic and very coarse hair types the nourishment they need. You can also use these products on chemically processed and synthetic hair and extensions.

I'm no stranger to Phillip Kingsley. Occasionally I use his famed Elasticizer Extreme as an intense treatment and when I first began to use it, I quickly familiarised myself with the brand and other products in his range. My own hair (afro), is vulnerable to damage, dryness and breakage if not cared for properly and needs products which leave it feeling moisturised and healthy, and given Phillip Kingsley's reputation I was expecting a lot from Moisture Extreme.

MOISTURE EXTREME SHAMPOO - Designed to effectively clean the hair and remove all styling and conditioning products without stripping the hair of its natural oils. The formula contains a gentle detergent derived from Cocoa Butter to cleanse with a slight foaming action, while conditioning agents make hair manageable, easy to comb and leave the cuticle smooth.
MOISTURE EXTREME CONDITIONER - Contains a blend of moisturising ingredients to nourish and repair the hair. It contains four natural oils including Almond, Wheatgerm, Avocado and Babassu which work to condition the hair without weighing it down. Avocado Oil contains nutrients and proteins that promote nourishment, while Babassu Oil works as a humectant with anti-stattic properties to leave hair soft and shiny.

Revlon Autumn/Winter Suede Rhapsody Collection - Part 1

Monday, September 20, 2010

Revlon's latest collection has now hit the high street and with it comes jewel tones and muted pastels.

Two matte nail polishes feature in this collection, Red Ribbon (Right), a maroon set with silver shimmer and Emerald City (Left) a vibrant forest green, again with subtle shimmer.

I'm not a fan of matte nail polishes, I'm a creme lover all day, every day and I really struggled with Red Ribbon in particular. Initially it went pretty smoothly, but dragged on my nails as I attempted a second coat, became gloopy and generally looked an absolute mess.

I put this down to the fact that it dries so quickly, you really need to work fast with this otherwise the brush will drag down the nail bed and make a mess of your application.. Even after removing and reapplying it three times on a couple of nails, it began to look worse and worse and I just gave up - so apologies for the utter STATE of my swatches - there's a reason why you can only see TWO fingers in my Red Ribbon swatch!

I dreaded applying Emerald City after my mishap with Red Ribbon, but in comparison it was a breeze to apply, Two coats were enough to achieve full coverage and I preferred the matte finish in this luscious green which I favoured more than I thought possible! However, with that being said I'm not a matte convert at all. They're just not for me.

Next up is the eye shadow quad, Silver Fox, which comprises of four shades  - an aubergine/maroon, grey, turquoise/mint green and sparkley white. I love the aubergine/maroon shade, which has a subtle gold shimmer in it, it's my favourite of the four and perfect for autumn and smoky eyes.

The shadows blended easily, although I had a lot of fallout from the white shadow, which was also a lttle chalky, as was the soft mint green. The grey and aubergine compliment one really well though and you can easily use this quad for both day and night eye looks which is a plus.

I didn't use a primer when I used this for the first time and within 30 minutes, the grey eye shadow that I had applied to my lid was already wearing away, so a primer's definitely needed if you want your look to last the duration of the day. You can also intensify the colours by wetting them, as you can with a lot of eye shadows. The quad is priced £7.99

What do you think so far? Are you a matte polish lover or hater and are you feelin' Silver Fox?

Stay tuned for the lipsticks ...

Review: Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Hydrating Care for Imperfection prone skin

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

What it says on the packaging :

Hydra-peel technology – a unique association of acids in a highly hydrating care:

LHA, a L’OrĂ©al patented acid helps micro-exfoliate the surface of the skin for a smoother surface and a uniform complexion.

Salicylic acid targets the pores helping to break down blackheads and whiteheads by gently micro-exfoliating the top layer of skin and clearing blocked pores. Salicylic acid also has antiseptic properties to cleanse the skin to help stop recurrence of blackheads.

Glycolic acid, the most common of the AHA’s is an all-natural derivative of sugar cane. Glycolic acid naturally exfoliates the skin and helps reduce the bacteria causing imperfections.

These three acids work in conjunction to target blemishes, black heads and open pores.

Women 25-45 years with imperfection-prone skin require a hydrating texture and for the first time Vichy has been able to create a texture that targets imperfections without drying out the skin

My skin is weird. I've resorted to saying it's combination/sensitive as I do get oily by midday, but then my skin can sometimes become quite dry and then out of the blue can often react to products and give me a delightful rash across my forehead so it's all over the place! I tend to steer clear of moisturisers that are specifically aimed at 'problem skin', as past experiences haven't been the most pleasant of experiences.

My skin is far from perfect and is still prone to blemishes and spots every now and then and ideally I'd love it to be less oily as it shifts my make up as the day goes on and I don't like repeatedly heaping on loose or pressed powder to combat shine.

Normaderm Tri-Activ Hydrating Care for Imperfection Prone skin (I think this may well win the title for the longest product name ever) is Vichy's first daily skincare product that combines three peeling acids (salicylic acid + glycolic acid + LHA) to target blemishes, open pores and excess sebum and shine.

It comes in a pump bottle, which dispenses the moisturiser easily and doesn't squirt too much product out at a time. It looks like an ordinary white cream moisturiser at first glance, but when applied distinctively feels like a serum giving a dewy finish, which quickly becomes matte. It absorbs very easily and is non sticky and non greasy. I don't find it drying and it really has maintained a matte finish to my skin which stays in place all day. Moisturisers that promise to combat shine tend to feel tight and make my skin look and feel quite dry, so the fact that this does neither is some feat!

Because my skin now stays matte all day, my blusher lasts much longer and at the end of the working day it's still visible, no longer needing its usual mid-afternoon touch up. Brilliant!

It doesn't interfere with my foundation either and works well as a base for my make up. I'll even go as far as saying that my pores do look a lot better and the skin on either side of my nose is much clearer. I do think taking my slap off every night (as opposed to every OTHER night) for the past few weeks has helped too though!

Overall my skin texture has remained on the whole quite smooth to the touch with no new lumps or bump emerging as a result of its usage. I've seen a very slight difference in existing blemishes, perhaps they'll diminish more over time, we'll see.

I'm pleased it doesn't cost the earth and I've bought my Mum a bottle as she has extremely oily skin - she rang me last week to tell me she's liking it so far and she's noticed a big difference in how shiny her face becomes as the day goes on - so that's two happy users!

If you have combination, oily, blemish prone skin, then this may be something you'd like to consider trying. Unfortunately it doesn't contain SPF, but personally that won't deter me from using it.

How much is it? £11.50
Where can I buy it? Boots

Guest Review: Liz Earle Haircare ...on Afro Hair.

Monday, September 13, 2010

With my hair currently in braids, I called on the help of Tobi, one half of fashion blogging duo, Style by Queens to try out the new haircare range by Liz Earle.

The new Liz Earle haircare range has been six years in the making with a breakthrough cleansing agent which derives from coconut. The range consists of one shampoo for all hair types and three conditioners - normal, oily and dry/damaged.

Read on to see what Tobi thought of the products she tried.

Liz Earle Botanical Shine Shampoo for All Hair Types.

Open opening the shampoo I was welcomed by a soft citrus fragrance, which I actually found quite refreshing. The Botanical Shine Shampoo boasts a creamy lather that performs and feels like a professional shampoo. I can concur that it quickly worked into a creamy lather.

Nonetheless, I cannot say that the shampoo felt overwhelmingly professional. After using the shampoo my hair did not feel dramatically different to my usual wash. However on the plus side my hair did not feel brittle or dry proving that the Botanical Shine Shampoo can be used on all hair types.

Botanical Shine Conditioner for Dry and Damaged Hair.

Immediately I loved the smell of this shea butter based product, reminiscent of an organic spa treatment product. Whilst massaging in the conditioner my hair felt silky and soft, which is what I would expect from a good conditioner for afro hair. After using the product my hair was soft, but perhaps not as soft as I would have liked it to be, bearing in mind I have high standards when it comes to the texture of my hair.

All in all I liked the conditioner but I was not blown away in comparison with my regular conditioner. I feel that my hair lost a bit of its normal shine, which was a bit disappointing seeing as I liked the feel of the conditioner during the application process.

Consequently I can confidently say that I shall  be using the shampoo again but possibly not the conditioner.

You can check out Liz Earle's hair care range on Prices start from £4

New From Philosophy - Blackberry Blossom & Christmas Gift Sets

Tuesday, September 07, 2010

Philosophy are well known for their heavenly smelling 3-in-1 shampoo, body wash and bubble bath scents and the latest addition comes in the form of Blackberry Blossom. Philosophy have captured the essence of fresh, fragrant wild blackberries and infused them into both into a 3-in-1 formula and matching body lotion.

As with past Philosophy 3-in-1's that I've purchased, I only use them as a body wash or in the bath so can't comment on their suitability as a shampoo. Blackberry Blossom has a light scent, lathers well and doesn't leave my skin feeling dry. The blackberry scent lingers for a short while on my skin before fading away when I step out of the shower, but it's the aroma that builds up in the shower which helps to jump-start my day that I'm bothered about, not how long it lasts on my skin as I'm not using it for a lasting body fragrance.

The body lotion, I found a bit too lightweight for my liking but then I'm extremely fussy when it comes to body lotions. It contains shea butter and those of you who don't need such a heavy duty moisturiser I'm sure will like the light formula. It didn't do much for me personally though and I didn't find it very moisturising to be honest.

Since you're here, you may as well cast your eyes over the luscious looking body treats Philosophy have in store for us this Christmas. They have some lovely gift sets complete with delicious scents that will have you gnawing at your arm as opposed to washing it.

Mmmm gingerbread and sugary cinnamon icing body washes in the shower? Yes please! Check out the 'Under the Mistletoe' lipgloss set aimed to leave you with gorgeous, kissable lips too.

What are your favourite Philosophy shower scents?

ELLE Celebrate their 25th Anniversary with Mavala

Sunday, September 05, 2010

ELLE, the world's largest fashion mag has teamed up with Mavala, to create a special Limited Edition nail polish to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Continuing the greige polish trend, this cream minky grey has a slight purple undertone which shows up in natural light. It's a pretty shade, but I can't help but think I've seen these type of shades all too often before. Two coats initially appeared to give enough coverage but after washing the dishes a few times, I think I could have done with a third coat as I can see the start of minute tip wear occurring 2 days after applying it.

Mavala ELLE launched exclusively at John Lewis stores on 1st September 2010, and priced at just £3.95 you can't complain!
