Using my Clarisonic - Week 4

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Hmmm I'm not impressed with my skin at all at the moment. It would appear that I've had a full on reaction to at least one of the products used in a REN facial I had two weeks ago (which I'm yet to blog about) and the breakout I've suffered as a result is refusing to shift.

As well as the cluster of pimples and dryness on my chin, with one large spot in particular erupting for good measure, I've also broken out on my cheeks! My super-smooth cheeks are currently no more, instead I've had a small patch of roughness taking up residency on both cheeks.

What.The.Hell.

I've continued to use my Clarisonic twice a day, and I'm still using the normal brush head. I use it on the lowest speed setting as I go over my chin and cheeks though. I've changed my skincare routine as a result of my breakout and I'm now using the Alpha-H range as the glycolic based products are recommended for acne and pigmentation prone skin. My Clarisonic has not made a scrap of difference to the break out as yet, which I've found frustrating. I'm hoping I'll have some improvement over the next week or so with continual use of the new products I'm using.

As you can see, over the course of four weeks, my skin has gone from having the best texture I've ever known it to have had since hitting puberty to now having obvious abrasions on the surface. My skin has never been perfect, but I haven't suffered this sort of roughness since my school days and it's really left me pretty peeved off.

It's not the Clarisonic's fault, it's a reaction I've had to a skincare product, but I was hasty in thinking that it could fix the problem in a matter of days. I've decided to continue documenting my usage of the Clarisonic on a monthly basis now, most likely for six months in total as I don't want to regurgitate what I've already mentioned if the changes are minimal from week to week. I hope that by recording an extensive review over a prolonged period of time will help those of you who are unsure whether to splash out in such an expensive product to make the right decision.

I'm contemplating taking photos of the break out (OMG my face sans make up on my blog ..hmmm, schexy!) to use in my next update so you can clearly see any improvement that occurs. The next update post will go up at the end of February,

On a side note, those of you based in the UK are in luck because Charlotte, over at Lipglossiping.com has revealed the final prize of her New Year Giveaway, and she's only gone and secured a Clarisonic for one lucky winner, so go and enter her giveaway now if you want a chance of winning! Clarisonic is supposed to give you that polished and squeaky clean skin.Try doing it once a day, perhaps only at night, and apply any AHA based night cream so that it will be absorbed even better.Im using a Muji skincare brush, as you mentioned it DOESN'T do anything for my breakouts either, but I no longer have dry dull skin and rough patches.I find that my cream is absorbing even better too.

Fyi, Im doing dry brushing on my face prior washing once at night.

Ah you poor thing. That sounds like a bad eruption of breakout, especially after a nice period of clear skin.

I would recommend some facial oil purely for the dry spots at night. I had a few dry pathes from Clinique's clarifying lotion and couldn't shift them, so alternated between applying Sanctuary's facial oil with Liz Arden's 8 hour balm.

Hope that helps!

@Farah - I've decided not to use it for the rest of the week and just go back to washing with either my hands or a facial brush. Thanks for the advice hon x

Oh gosh, darling. Yeah, using the clariisonic twice a day may be too much for your skin. I can really only do it a few times a week. I hope your skin restores itself!

I've been reading your clarisonic posts and after this one I feel I just need to throw out my professional observation.

I don't want to start up a massive debate or anything but from my knowledge and experience I believe it could in fact be the clarisonic that is causing you issues as opposed to the products you've used unless you've had a direct reaction to them.

You see, even though the brush is marketed as a gentle deep cleanser, it actually exfoliates the skin and if you're using it as often as twice a day you're removing active skin cells that are regenerating causing trauma to your skin.

This can cause dryness, irritation and can also lead to hyper-pigmentation and aging. It's not the brush that is bad, it's how often it's used. Personally, I would recommend using it 2-3 times a week or less if you're also using an exfoliating product as well like a scrub, acid exfoliant or muslin cloth so you're giving your skin a chance to regenerate and heal itself.

This is just my opinion from experience I have gained as a beauty therapist and if I'm wrong, please let someone correct me.

@B - Yeah, I'm gonna step away from the Clarisonic this week! LOL Cheers hon (pretty profile pic btw).

@Mercee - Thanks a lot for your comment. That's an interesting insight. It didn't feel rough on my skin at all and was perfectly fine for the first two weeks which is why I think it was the facial that turned my skin crazy.

I'm gonna hold off using it for the rest of the week and see if my skin calms down. My forehead is still smooth, it's just my chin which and the two small patches on my cheeks which are affected.

I'm no skincare expert, so I'm all for taking your advice on board. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Mercee : You are right abt the over exfoliation. Vex; just lay the clarisonic off for a week and see how it goes.

Dont worry hun, I'm sure everything will be back to normal soon!:)
