Review: Maybelline Volum' Express One by One

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Oh when will I learn?

I saw the advert on TV, was taken in by the eyelashes eyelash extensions (as obvious as they were) worn by the model, but since I like Maybelline's Colossal mascara I had hope hopes for the new One by One Volum' Express. Ok, so maybe the bright coral-red tube swayed me slightly too!

The new rubber-bristled brush is apparently shaped so that every last lash gets smooth, even coverage *yawns* We've heard it all before right? Yep, well it still didn't stop me from being sucked in.

Currently on offer in Boots (and possibly Superdrug too, I'm not sure), I picked this up earlier this week, and looked forward to trying it, the following morning.Given that the brush is made of plastic, that should have set alarm bells ringing as I'm still trying to figure out who had the brainwave that a plastic comb would transfer mascara through delicate eyelashes without incident!

I had lash extensions put in recently and my lashes have been left a shadow of what they were after using RapidLash. Now that the extensions have all fallen out, I can see that my natural lashes are shorter, however I've still been able to use my favourite mascara and create an effect of fuller lashes, disguising the damage to them.

I was keen to try a new mascara to see what I could still achieve with mascara, while they grow back to their former glory. Unfortunately I wasn't impressed with its maiden voyage - at all. The wand failed to brush through my lashes easily, tugging on them as I combed it through, in a similar fashion to how Revlon Grow Lucious performed. However, I give One by One an extra point for 'tripping' on my lashes in an almost aggressive fashion - that must have been the packed, plastic bristle comb working its magic!

The mascara I applied during the first coat was minimal, barely making a difference and it was near on impossible to get the comb to separate my lashes cleanly. Two coats later and my lashes looked clumpy, and quite frankly an utter mess which is very annoying, especially when you're trying to get ready and out of the door in a hurry.

Hot mess from the side ...

Hot mess from the front ...

The same happened the following morning, and the morning after that. I tried brushing the wand through slowly to see if I could sustain more control, but nothing seemed to work! I was left with carnage on my face and spidery looking eyelashes. All this mascara does is highlight the awful shape my lashes are now in. It is NOT my friend!

Needless to say, I'm not impressed and this is currently lying in the bin after just three uses. I'd love to know who the reviewers are raving about it on the Boots website - reveal yourselves!! 5 stars my a*se!

Furthermore, to whom it may concern, I think it's about time the current refund policy in the UK on cosmetics was re-evaluated! I'm so envious of you ladies in the U.S who can try out products to your hearts content, knowing that if they don't work, or if you've picked the wrong shade then you can return them, no questions asked.

Lancome Hypnose Drama, can you forgive me? I'll never cheat on you again! How ironic that Maybelline and Lancome are under the same company (L'Oreal)!!

Have any of you tried this and if so, did it perform better for you?

How much is it? £8.49
Where can I buy it? Boots, Superdrug

I've got some of this and I quite like it. It's not amazing, but its okay.

I've been on a Mascara kick this week - I've had No 7 Exceptional Curls (okay), Collection 2000 Skyscraper (hate the brush, but the product itself is lovely) and 17 Photo Flawless Lashes (which I haven't tried yet).

My absolute fave at the moment is Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara. £20-ish but it really does the job. Thickens, volumises, holds curl. LOVE it.

I've read a few unfavourable reviews of this mascara. I wonder who's been giving it the 5 star reviews?! x

I bought it a couple weeks ago too and it's not really that good at all. I much prefer the falsies mascara!

I actually really like this? For work it is really good on my lashes - separates them but coats them nicely. I wouldn't use it for a night out though because i like fuller lashes for that. I should add I am blessed with full long lashes, so that might be why i find it to be good.xxx

The brush would not be my friend! It's probably a bit random but I've never seen a mascara packaged like that. Is there a plug in the top of the tube? I agree about the returns policy too. I would be a lot less nervy about foundation purchases. That or improve sample policy. I guess I can probably go on dreaming!

I've heard lots of bad things about this mascara, the main thing you can see is that is does not lengthen AT ALL! Not impressed. My all time favourite is Diorshow, but I've got a few to use up before I can buy that again!x

I second the notion for Clarins Wonder Perfect, it's really good!

Another one that I quite like is Maybelline's Falsies. The first time you use it, it's a bit meh because the brush takes some getting used to but the second time, wow, with one coat my lashes look massive.

Oh, I don't think it looks that bad on you! I was expecting super crazy spider lashes!

I think the packaging completely duped me into buying it though. I loved that the brush was separate from the tube (like in the US!) & it's a bright colour = not good reasons to buy something. & I generally hate plastic comb brushes..

I agree about the returns policy, but sadly, I have doubts it would ever come into effect. QVC have a returns policy I think - I've always thought about trying Amazing Cosmetics Concealer through them, which has a mixture of good & bad reviews!

I like this Mascara but it does not compare to Falsies or Colossal or DiorShow. But my lashes are faint and non existant so most mascaras make a difference.

There's nothing more frustrating than buying a new mascara after being suckered in by the advertising then using it to find out it's complete shit!

I'm using a mascara I hate at the moment. I only spent £7 but it's still annoying xx

I use good ole Maybeline NY!! The green top and pink bottle.

It has been around for years. I refuse to try anything that claims it will grow your lashes! *I have flash forwards of my eyes being damaged forever*

I have been taking Biotin and it helps with hair, nails and kicks off some body fat. My lashes are longer than ever.

My eyelash mascara is a true ritual.

I do wear lashes for fun but only with glue not of that extension application. I know too many people who have lost their real lashes trying this method.

1. I curl with an eye lash curler. One I bought years ago from the drugstore. I think its Revlon.

2. I apply the Maybeline NY mascara and put on a couple of coats depending on my mood.

3. I have a little eyelash comb that gets the excess mascara off.

4. Clean off lids with a Q-tip

Sometimes I don't bother to curl them and they do pretty well.

Good luck out there!!

I don't like the rubber brushes. I keep it oldschool with Diorshow. It's just... the best.
