Review: Spa Illuminata, Mayfair

Saturday, June 25, 2011

My skin's been through the wars lately, so when I was offered a chance to get some TLC at the luxurious Spa Illuminata day spa in Mayfair, I didn't need to be asked twice.

I opted for an Aroma Export Nourish facial, which promised to rejuvenate, hydrate and plump my skin and I couldn't wait to be pampered for the next 1hr and 15 minutes. Spa Illuminata lies in the heart of trendy Mayfair and offers a range of relaxing facials using Decleor products. It also stocks the full range of Decleor products which are available for purchase too.

Upon my arrival, I was offered a drink (I opted for a glass of water) and promptly handed a quick questionnaire to complete which covered my skin concerns and what I wished to achieve from the treatment. One of the first things you notice about Spa Illuminata when you're taken off the main floor to the treatment rooms, is the decor which mirrors a Greek/Roman style spa. Marble walls, floors and tall concrete pillars are in abundance and add to the regal atmosphere.

My therapist, Grace, came to collect me bang on time (7pm) and led me into a softly lit treatment room, which was decked in variants of cream and beige. I was instructed to undress (leaving on my undies) and lie under the cool white sheet which was laid on the treatment table.

She soon returned and eased me into a relaxing, yet firm back massage using Decleor's Baume Relax balm which couldn't have come at a a better time, after a strenuous day at the office, hunched over my desk. It felt wonderful and was administered for at least 15 minutes. Bliss...

Next, she removed my make up and cleansed with Aroma Cleanse Cleansing Milk, followed by the Tonifying Lotion, which contains the Essential Waters of Orange and Lime Blossom.

My skin was then exfoliated with Purete Exfoliante which can be used daily and is formulated for all skin types. It didn't feel 'scratchy', which is good, as the texture is the first thing (alongside price) that I look at when shopping for an exfoliant.

I correctly guessed that a mask was going to be placed on my face at some point and the Aroma White C+ Intense Brightening Mask, from Decleor's new skin brightening range Aroma White C+ was the chosen product. A concentrated fabric mask, packed full of hydrating agents, as well as extracts of licorice, peony and vitamin C, the mask aims to even out the complexion, and help reduce the signs of pigment spots whilst preventing the appearance of new ones.

The fabric mask was placed over my face and left for ten minutes before being gently peeled off. I couldn't believe the difference in texture. My skin felt amazing. Grace then applied Vitaroma eye cream and finished off Aroma Night Neroli Balm which kept my skin feeling supple and super soft until the following morning! I loved this mask and was disappointed to hear trhat iot was exclusive to salons only. Not to be deterred, I searched high and low over the internet and found that it's available exclusively on the Decleor site - priced at £40 for five sachets. Hmmm... I'm waiting until I have another 'What the hell' moment, (or lottery win, whichever comes first) until that purchase is made.

What I really liked about this treatment is that I was made to feel so relaxed (I fell asleep as I was having my face massaged, and woke myself up with my snoring - twice!) and my therapist was full of knowledge answering my questions and also probing me for information about the products I used in order to get a better idea of my skin type. We all know when we're being fobbed with sub-standard textbook answers (I've been subjected to more than enough in my beauty-loving lifetime) but Grace was so personable, she really enhanced the treatment experience.

The facial left my skin feeling as soft as butter and was all I had hoped it would be - and I should think so too, given the price of it. To experience this facial, it'll set you back £110 - a drop in the ocean for Spa Illuminata's celebrity client list and loyal well heeled customers. For the average consumer, this will no doubt be a very special treat!

If you're looking for a soothing, tranquil pampering facial experience - complete with a thorough, relaxing back massage thrown in for good measure, then you can do far worse than check out Spa Illuminata.
