Which Flavour Would YOU Have Chosen?

Friday, October 28, 2011

So the latest flavour of the limited edition Vaseline pot has been unveiled - Creme Brulee! I've never eaten Creme Brulee before, I think it looks disgusting (not a fan of cold custard), so I wasn't particularly moved when I heard what the new scent/flavour was. Have any of you tried it yet?  Vaseline isn't my first choice of lip balm as I don't find it moistursing enough for my lips in the long run.

Which flavour would you have chosen to create instead?

ETA: I had a smell of it this evening, it's not a  strong scent and I think it smells quite synthetic to be honest.

Need These In My Life! Models Own Beetlejuice Collection

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Its not often that nail polishes get me really excited, but Models Own new collection of unique "oil slick" colours made me sit up and take notice the second  I laid eyes on them, a couple of weeks ago.

The BEETLEJUICE collection consists of five multi-tonal shades. Each bottle contains four pearlescent colours mixed into one gleaming shade for a wicked high shine finish.

I'll never be a fan of  insects, but nevertheess it was interesting to discover that these polishes are inspired by non other than the wings of a beetle.  I guess we have them to  thank for the polishes impressive shimmering duo chrome finish.

If you're already giddy at the sight at the images above, then brace yourself for how they look in reality. Take a look at these exclusive swatches over on BritishBeautyBlogger.

They'll be launching in November on http://www.modelsownit.com/  and will be priced £5 each.

TFB by Tulisa. The Female Boss? Hmm Not Quite.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

I love X-Factor, definitely not for the 'talent', but for the hilarious banter which appears on my Twitter timeline, without fail every Saturday and Sunday evening. When Tulisa was announced as the replacement for that annoying twat Cheryl Cole, like many I was curious to see how she'd fare in comparison. Surprisingly, she hasn't been too bad (okay, she annoyed me on Saturday night) and I much prefer her to 'the toilet attendant beater' any day.

Currently enjoying the sweet smell of success, Tulisa has wasted no time making sure she rakes up the pennies in case her X-Factor career is cut short. TFB (The Female Boss) by Tulisa, is the singer's first perfume and is released on Thursday.

Tulisa and her fellow X-Factor judges. I'm so #teamkelly

I'm really not one for celebrity perfumes, I tend to find them pretty tacky and their bottles and overall packaging are never half as decorative as scents from well known perfume houses. Unfortunately, TBF doesn't prove me wrong here. I don't like the packaging at all. Sexy and feminine it's mots definitely not. In fact it reminds me of a cheap club night flyer! By the way that dress she's wearing on the box, was on the ASOS site a couple of months ago!

Tulisa says:

"I wanted a fragrance that I could relate to. Something powerful without losing its girlieness. I wanted to be able to wear it day and night. This fragrance will really give the girls the confidence to show those boys who is boss!"

Any guesses for what the latest flavour will be? I think it's vanilla or white chocolate.

Sleek Brow kit Vs HD Brow Palette

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Well groomed eyebrows can transform a face. They are the frame of our eyes, and consequently, they have the power to change our entire look.

My preferred method of eyebrow grooming is threading, it's quick, cheap (if you go to the right place) and gives my brows a defined, yet natural looking finish. Occasionally, I'll opt to get my eyebrows tinted too, but when I don't, I reach for my MAC eyebrow pencil in Stud to fill them in - when I can be be bothered.

Sleek have reecently released a Brow Kit to help tame those unruly brows. Available in two shades, Light and Dark, Dark is better suited to us dark haired girls and is pictured below.

To accompany the brow treatment HD Brows ( review here) also have a brow palette which they recommend you use, to help keep brows tamed and groomed.

Both sets are presented in sturdy plastic packaging. Sleek in matte black and HD Brows in a glossy black finish.

The Sleek Brow Kit comes with a pigmented wax, smooth in texture to fill in the brows, a dense setting powder to keep the wax from slipping off, two precise brushes,  mini slanted tweezer plus an in-built mirror all for £7.99.

It bears more than a passing resemblance to Benefits Brow Zings which retails for £22.50 - see for yourself here.

The HD Brow Palette is available in three shades and its RRP is £19.99

• Vamp (pictured): For dark hair…comes with a nude, a carbon shadow, and two dark brown tone powders. Used as an eye shadow palette, this will create a dramatic smoky look

• Bombshell: For blondes…comes with a nude, a carbon shadow, and two blonde tone powders. When used as an eye shadow palette, this will create a cool natural daytime look and a soft evening look.

• Foxy: For brunettes…comes with a nude, a carbon shadow, and two medium brown tone powders. Use this as an eye shadow palette to create a warm natural daytime look or a smouldering night time look.

I like that the HD Brows Palette doubles up as eye shadow - the matte shades all carry great pigment and aren't patchy in application at all. However, instead of the beige shade, I'd have preferred a wax in its place instead.

For this reason, the Sleek palette has the edge over the HD brows in terms of both cost and versatility as you don't really need four colours for your brows, do you?

Sleek Brow Kits will be available online and in selected Superdrug branches on Wed 26 September

HD Brow Palettes are available to buy online, here.

*PR Samples - The HD Brow Kit came in the September GlossyBox, which was provided via PR. It didn't suit my guest reviewer, so she gave it to me.

Revlon Top Speed Fast Dry Enamel - Have You Tried These Yet?

Sunday, October 23, 2011

I spied these at a Christmas press event a few months ago and at the time thought they looked promising.  Has anyone seen them on display, in the flesh yet?

Revlon Top Speed Nail Enamels have a built in top coat which claims to deliver a salon-smooth finish that sets in 60 seconds. I've liked all the Revlon polishes I've bought so far and my fave shade is still Tropical Temptation so I'm keen to check these out.

I've spotted them on the Boots website here, but I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that there appears to be are only eight shades available to buy. I'm off to New York again shortly, so I'm gonna sit tight and have a look at them out there and hopefully see the range in all its 32 shade glory!

Price: £6.49 each

Are you a fan of Revlon polishes?

Hangin' Tough - NKOTBSB

Saturday, October 22, 2011

In the late 80s, for me,  it was all about my Commodore 64, Knightrider and New Kids On The Block. I saw a tweet (I'm on Twitter as @VexintheCity) on Wednesday night, mentioning the 80s/90s heartthrobs would be bringing their joint tour with the Backstreet Street boys to Europe. I saw the ad in The Metro on the way to work yesterday morning and tickets were purchased within the hour!

I've been singing NKOTB tunes for almost two days straight and I'm showing no signs of shutting up yet. I'm really looking forward to this. My friend is threatening to disown me if I rock up in a NKOTB t-shirt - she knows damn well that's exactly what I'm gonna do! I used to love Jordan! Oh yes I did! I remember doing 'The Right Stuff' dance moves in the playground at primary school, bumbag around my waist, complete with my black suede Kickers. Oh the memories!

The Backstreet Boys are the only recent boy band that I don't mind and have a bit of personality, and who doesn't know a Backtreet Boys tune (No? You haven't lived!) so I intend on having an uncensored, pop-tastic night girly night out, worlds away from the usual beat-sexy, stream of hip hop which fills my ears on a regular basis.

For those of you old enough to remember (and appreciate) NKOTB in all their youthful glory, this is for you:

Step By Step...My fave NKOTB track!

Oh and I can't wait to get down to this baby:

Can you tell I'm excited? It's gonna be such a fun night. Anyone else going?

Nicki Minaj for OPI

Saturday, October 22, 2011

OPI seem to be getting into the swing of their celebrity collaborations. In the past we've seen them work with Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Serena Williams, as well as the Kardashians and now they've called upon the services of the biggest hip pop (yeah, that was a deliberate typo) act on the planet right now, to front their latest celebrity collection - Nicki Minaj.

Nicki's love for bright colours is well documented, in fact I don't recall ever seeing her in a muted outfit! The six-piece nail polish collection, which is set to hit beauty counters early 2012, is made up of shades inspired by songs from Minaj's debut album, including 'Metal 4 Life,' 'Fly,' 'Save Me,' 'Did It On Em,' 'Super Bass Shatter,' (a new shatter/crackle shade) and of course 'Pink Friday.'

On a side note, I'm sure dozens of you have seen the video of that annoying lil' brat in the making cute kid on You Tube, rapping and singing along to Super Bass - she met her 'idol' on the Ellen DeGeneres Show last week. It says a lot when a five year old can sing a damn sight better than most of this year's UK X-Factor contestants!

So anyway back to the polishes. Will you releasing your inner Barbie, with any of these shades? I can't believe that there isn't a killer fuschia pink in this collection - OPI have missed a trick there! I quite like the look of Fly and Did It On Em though - can't wait to see swatches of those.

Back to M.A.C!

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Hahaha see what I did with my post title there? I couldn't resist, sorry!

MAC was the first cosmetic brand to get me excited about make up. I struggled to find make up on the high street which complimented my skin tone, when I began to experiment with it, in my late teens. In my early twenties I found myself in a position where MAC was affordable and easily attainable. It also happened to be the brand, which all the celebrities I ogled at, wore or were reported to wear in the magazines that I used to buy, maknig the brand even more attractive.

I remember my first visit to a MAC counter as if it were yesterday. I'd paid for a makeover at the counter in Selfridges in May 2001 (£20, I think) and came home with purchases which would ignite the beginning of a lengthy obsession - MAC Lipglass in Oh Baby, MAC Lip Pencil in Chestnut, MAC Blush in Taffy (anyone remember that?) and a foundation, which has long since been discontinued.

Until yesterday, I personally haven't bought anything from MAC in well over a year. I own a considerable amount of products from the permanent line but the last LE collection I'd fawned over was Colour Craft. I was already reaching breaking point in regards to how much I owned and the controversy surrounding the Rodarte collection last summer, helped my decision at the time, to distance myself from the brnad.

Since last summer, my interest in MAC has waned and I've gone from being a walking encylcopedia able to reel off every MAC product under the sun, to having no idea which limited edition collection was coming, or what shades had been discontinued.

A frustrating incident involving a broken Oystercard, led me to pop into the Covent Garden branch yesterday evening, en route to an appointment. I was instantly drawn to the stand showcasing the latest limited edition collection and found myself looking at the Posh Paradise display.

The Posh Paradise collection sees the return of mattene lipsticks, which deliver a semi-matte, creamy finish - 10 shades in all (limited edition):

Naked Bliss - Neutral light pink
Rare Exotic -  Bright mid-tone blue pink
Legendary - Mid-tone brick red
Unknown Pleasures - Deep red blue
Seeds of Desire - Deep brown plum
Eden Rouge - Bright blue-red
Delectable - Orange-beige
Potent Fig - Deep blue grape
Deliciously Foribbden - Mid-tone berry
Fresh Amour - Light lavender

Nail Polishes (limited edition):

Immortal Gold -  Pale gold (Frost)
Rain of Flowers -  Blackened violet with violet pearlized pigments (Frost) (Repromote)

...and finally eight Paint Pots (limited edition):

Treasure Hunt -  Light pearled yellow (Frost)
Half-Wild -  Mid-tone purple (Frost)
Hyperviolet - Deep violet (Frost)
Nubile -  Light peachy nude (Frost)
Idyllic -  Mid-tone copper bronze (Frost)
Genuine Treasure -  Reflects antique gold (Frost)
Pure Creation -  Mid-tone frosty blue (Frost)
Imaginary -  Blackened navy (Frost)

I picked up one of the lipsticks, Legendary, and was very restrained as each one  I managed to swatch, I loved. I'm scared of red lipstick, I see it on others and admire their 'bravery' for rocking it so confidently. I love the way Kelly Rowland, amongst others wears red lippie with ease - and I'm jealous! Legendary may well be 'my red' - it's a warm brick tone and less harsh on my skintone than say, MAC Ruby Roo - which I own, but never wear beyond the front door for fear of looking like a clown!

I want a couple of the paint pots and need to swatch the rest of the lipsticks so have planned to return later in the week.

I also had a very quick, partial look (all of 2 mins) at the Styledriven collection too.

There's so much to play with in Styledriven and best of all is that it's all permanent, so no need to break your neck rushing to a store or counter for fear of it selling out!

I bought two of the lippies, So Very Good and Made To Last - great every day colours, which'll add a bit of oomph to neutral eyes and toned down cheeks.

I'll have a look at the rest, but doubt I'll get any of the shadows as I have enough eye shadow as it is. I may get a couple of pencils though. I definety want a couple of paint pots from Style Driven though.

It was fun browsing in MAC last night and I felt the old excitement I used to get when a new collection came out. I think my extended break from the brand, has done me the world of good as I was basically all MAC'ed out and found going to stores a chore as it was all so samey. It's good to have gotten my groove back!

Have you ever gone off a brand, only to be lured back to it some time later? Also, have you bought anything from these collections? If so, what should I check out?

All prodcust can be currently found on counter and online.
