2012/2013 CoolBrands - How Cool Are YOU?

When you think of big name brands, who instantly spring to mind? Nike? Google? Apple?

CoolBrands is an annual initiative to identify and pay homage to the nation’s coolest brands. Since 2001 they have commissioned an independent survey of experts and consumers (that's the general public to you and I) to produce a yearly barometer of the coolest brands, people and places in Britain.

Illamasqua's Alex Box, Kiss FM's Rickie & Melvin, actor David Harewood, Plan B and even fashion blogger Suzie Bubble are just some of the 'chosen ones' on this year's Expert Council who have decided which brands are..well, cool! Check out the Expert Council in its entirety here.

Organised by The Centre for Brand Analysis, the prestigious CoolBrands list is devised from over 10,000 identified brands, which are then shortlisted down to to 1,200.

Anyway, enough of the facts and figures. I'm sure you just want to know which brands have been deemed the coolest in the UK. Well, without further ado...

The official 2012/13 CoolBrands top 20 is:

1. Apple
2. You Tube
3. Aston Martin
4. Twitter
5. Google
6. BBC iPlayer
7. Glastonbury
8. Virgin Atlantic
9. Bang & Olufsen
10. Liberty
11. Sony
12. Bose
12. Haagen-Dazs
114. Selfridges
15. Ben & Jerry's
16. Mercedes-Benz
17. Vogue
18. Skype
19. Nike
20. Nikon

What do you think? Do you agree with the top 20? Is Apple a deserving winner? I can't say I'm surprised they've come up trumps - but to date, I must be one of the few people who still doesn't own an Apple product! My iPad lasted just over a week, before I took it back as I kept forgetting it was there and continued to use my laptop instead! Pretty cool to see You Tube up there in second place. I won't lie, I did feel a moment of pride thinking of all you dedicated vloggers recording your trips to the toilet and such! (it's a joke, calm down!!).

On a serious note though, nobody can deny the effect social media channels such as You Tube and Twitter has had over the past year. Their influence on the way we share news (and rumours) has been immense as well as the way we use them to share useful information and offer tips and advice.

Brands do not apply or pay to be considered in the annual Coolbrands round up, and every September a selection of the coolest brands are featured in a fancy, hardbook colour book (see pics below), which is available in all good bookshops for £50.

Yep, you get the idea...makes great coffee table reading!

I wonder who'd come out on top if there were a Top 20 list of beauty brands....in fact, can somebody organise that please? Thanks in advance -  Oh and naturally I'm offering my services for a coveted seat on that panel!
