Kiehls Aromatic Blends Collection

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

When I think of Kiehls, I immediately think of their bestselling body moisturiser, Creme de Corps (which I happen to think is highly overrated, but that's another blog post). I recently had a look at their latest collection of products and was keen to find out more about the brand.

The new Aromatic Blends Collection sees the release of four new scents:

Fig Leaf & Sage
Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit
Orange Flower & Lychee
Vanilla & Cedarwood

Now I love the smell of vanilla. Candles, room sprays, perfumes, you name it - if it has vanilla in it, my nose is in it! It also brings back memories of when I was younger, when my brother and I would sneakily scoop eat ice-cream straight out of the tub - much to our mother's despair.

So naturally, the Vanilla & Cedarwood Aromatic Mist was definitely my fave of the four new scents, and I was really pleased to be given a bottle to try. I can't get enough this, the warm sweet vanilla notes work so well with the soft, woody hues of cedarwood.  I'm sniffing my wrist and groaning in appreciation as I type this post. I prefer this as an evening scent, or to wear on cooler days as I fear it'll be a little overpowering in warmer weather.

There are also matching body lotions and body cleanser available in the same scents too. The body cleanser is pretty good. The scent (vanilla & cedarwood, again) was pleasant enough, didn't smell particularly synthetic. I wasn't so impressed with the body lotion - far too light in consistency for me and reminded me of a popular high street brand which begins with 'V' and costs far less.

I'd recommend you check the scents out, they're the stand out product in this collection for me.

Available from September 2012

 Aromatic Blend RRP £48 (100ml) £26 (30ml)
Body Lotion £24 (250ml)
Body Cleanser £19 (250ml)

Shu Uemura Masterclas with Mei Rees + Color Atelier

Sunday, July 22, 2012

On Thursday evening, I attended a very intimate (five of us were in attendance) masterclass with Mei Rees, senior make up artist for Shu Uemera, which took place in their store on Neal Street, Covent Garden.

Mei talked us through the five different textures of Shu Uemura Pressed Eyeshadows and introduced us to their Color Atelier custom palette design.

The Shu Uemura Pressed Eyeshadows are available in five finishes:  Matte (M), Pearl (P), Iridescent (IR), Metallic (ME) and Glitters (G) and are designed for layering as well as being suitable to wear on their own. The blushes, which also fit into the custom palettes are available in a matte or pearl finish.

Mei used a Shu Uemura gel liner as a base, layered with eye shadow to create a mermaid inspired look finished off with eyelash curling from their iconic gold curlers and best selling corner lashes. If you've ever wondered how to pull off glitter or shimmer eye shadow, Mei suggests you just dab it on the centre of the lid. This will open your lids up and frame your eyes without being overwhelming. Also, if wearing glitter on the eye, try teaming it with a matte lip - unless you want to pay homage to a disco ball.

The Nail Files: Revlon Sheer Seafoam

Saturday, July 21, 2012

...and the award for Worst Nail Polish of 2012 goes to ...*drumroll* THIS!

What on earth were Revlon thinking when they signed off this awful, awful formula and included it in their Summer 2012 collection? At first glance, this was the perfect seafoam green in the bottle. I couldn't chuck it in my basket quick enough when I spied it in CVS and visualisd myself happily reapplying it all summer long. I had big plans for this nail polish.

So imagine my confusion and disappointment when after three coats, I ended up with this! This isn't flattering, leaves a pitiful hint of colour on the nail, has no opacity to it whatsoever and is streaky no matter how many coats you pile on.

Urgh, what IS this?!

A picture speaks a thousand words. Somebody explain the purpose of this polish, what exactly am I meant to do with it? Don't recommend I use it to layer over another polish, for I just don't see the point of that. The formula is so watered down, it renders itself utterly useless. Had I still be in NY when I swatched this, mark my words I've had marched straight back to CVS for a refund.

I usually love the offerings from Revlon, I own lots of their make up but this has left me thoroughly confused.

How to Rock a Blue Lip

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Whilst in the flagship Apple Store, a couple of months ago in New York, I spotted a black girl, wearing her natural hair out in the biggest 'fro, wearing blue lipstick.  Her make up was flawless and I couldn't stop staring at her, as I stood in the queue. Her presence demanded your full attention and I was (and still am) convinced she was wearing Illamasqua's Apocalips lipstick. It looked A-mazing on her and made me think (just for a second) that maybe, I could look half decent wearing it too. Even the Mr had to admit that she looked good with it on.

A post on gossip blog, Necole Bitchie made me think about that girl again today and my thoughts on  wearing such a dramatic, unusual colour on the lips.

I love Amber Rose at the best of times, and I think her lips look amazing here. She lets her lips do the talking, toning down the rest of her makeup and making them the focus feature in her look. Love it! There was another photo of her wearing a not-so-flattering blue lip, but I thought I'd focus on what she did right as it's such a difficult look to pull off in the first place. I'd love to know what this shade is, my guess is that it was conjured up with pro pigments of some kind.

I'm not feelin' this look at all. Teyana Taylor has gorgeous, full lips, but she does them no favours with this messily applied, unflattering light blue lipstick. I think she should have defined them with lip liner and chosen a deeper blue, which would have complimented her skin tone better, than the clown like application shown here.

Fancy trying your hand at a blue lip? Then check out the following products

Illamasqua lipstick in Apocalips
Illamasqua intense lipgloss in Gender
KA'OIR lipsticks in Pool Party, Baby Bleu and Ka'oir Doll
Barry M Lip Paint  in Robot Blue

Lots of  blue lips on You Tube too...

Would you dare to wear a blue lipstick/gloss? I don't know if I have the guts...

Muji 'Kim Kardashian' 5 Drawer Acrylic - Coming Soon.

Saturday, July 21, 2012

One of the best things about my old house, was the in-built storage in my bedroom, which housed my make up collection. It was spacious, practical and indulged my almost weekly purchases. Since moving back home, my make up storage space has been annoyingly halved. It means so many products go unloved as I simply forget I own them as I can't physically SEE them at a glance.

When a stack of acrylic storage drawers by CoolKube, which appeared very similar to those used by Kim Kardashian appeared on the scene a few months ago, I immediately made a wow that they'd be mine- until I saw the price of them! £295, I don't fuggin' think so! I just couldn't justify spending that much on what are essentially plastic drawers.

Anyway, Muji are about to partially answer my make up storage prayers. For on August 24th they will be releasing limited stock of (just make them permanent, already) large 5 row acrylic drawers, pretty similar to those seen in Kim Kardashain's bathroom (see below). Ironically, it was Muji I first turned to years ago for suitable make up storage purchasing their smaller 5 drawer storage unit (now discontinued). They still house my lipglosses today.

The Muji 5 Drawer Acrylic

So yeah, there you have it. If you're on the hunt for some new make up storage, then these drawers will be ideal, particularly if you have a sizeable collection. They are currently available on the US Muji site, so I'm going to nicely ask Hubs to order me a few (max 4 per order online) as  they work out cheaper at £18 each. Combined with the treasures I've spied in The Container Store, I'll finally have my perfect set-up when I move.

Available from Muji online and instore, priced £24.95 each from August 24th.

Will you be buying them?

Another perfume dupe? Zara Black EDT

Tuesday, July 03, 2012

At the weekend, I had a big clearout and stumbled upon my Travalo, which was still full of the remainder of my Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb bottle. I made a vow to make time to track down the much talked about Zara dupe.

Whilst unexpectedly finding myself in Zara last night, I caught sight of their own brand fragrances and made a beeline for them, hoping to discover this bargain copy for myself.

A quick sniff of the testers on display, and I'd found it - or so I thought! Zara Black bore some similarity to Flowerbomb when I sprayed it instore, but when I got home the more I smelt it, the more it reminded me of another fragrance...Narciso Rodriguez For Her!

A quick Google reveals that the scent which originally created the buzz as the Flowerbomb dupe is in fact, Zara Black Peony.

Either way, I'm a very happy bunny. It makes for a lovely evening scent and now naturally, I have to go back and buy Black Peony! I was in a bit of a rush so didn't take the time to smell their other scents but for the price of them, it'd be rude not to.

How much is it? £6.90 (30ml)
Where Can I buy it?  Zara of course!

Stila In The Light Palette - Pics + Swatches

Sunday, July 01, 2012

When this unexpectedly arrived in the post a couple of months ago, I was on cloud nine. I'd admired it almost a year earlier at a press event and has consequently blogged about it here.

It's as pretty as I remembered, but due to being completely rushed off my feet doing this, that and the other, I've only had a chance to play with it now and luckily I'm not disappointed.

Comparable to the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette which I have, this is another neutrals palette which suits a wide range of skin tones and eye colours. I find this just as flattering on my skin tone as I did the Naked palette. I'm not about to go into a deep comparison discussion about the two - to be honest, they both look similar on me when swatched. Obviously, the stand out difference is the price, this is £25 compared to Urban Decay's £36.

The Naked palettes (there are two of them, if you didn't know) have 12 eye shadows in them, and the Stila has 10 - again a mixture of matte and shimmery shades. It's compact in size and can be stored away easily and the shadows, which can be used wet or dry are boosted by the inclusion of a Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner.

I'm not crazy about the materials used for the packaging, I fear the cardboard will get battered if you're not careful and I've noticed one of the shadows has shifted slightly since these photos were taken. If you take care of it though, you shouldn't have any problems.
