During my teens, if you weren’t doing the latest Aaliyah dance routine or playing her albums, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number or One in a Million on repeat, then at some point you found yourself questioning the meaning of life.
Aaliyah was the R’n’B princess of the 90s. The popular singer was enjoying a successful career and global fame, when she was tragically killed in a plane crash. aged just 22.
Today marks the 16th anniversary of her death.
About a year ago, I saw a retweet on my Twitter timeline, it was written by Aaliyah superfan, Jennifer Risinger who had created a petition to convince M.A.C to create and dedicate a collection in her honour. I thought it was a great idea and given the success of the Selena collection, which was launched to commemorate the much loved 90s Latina singer who was tragically murdered, I knew it would be a hit as Aaliyah has a huuuuge fanbase. I dutifully signed the petition and would read the email updates celebrating each new milestone as thousands upon thousands of fans all signed away.
Well she’s only gone and done it, backed by rapper Missy Elliot and Aaliyah’s brother Rashad, M.A.C have listened to the people and announced that next summer there will indeed be an #AaliyahforMAC collection released for sale. Never underestimate the power of social media.
Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all. Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection. You made it happen! Stay tuned in 2018. #AaliyahforMAC @aaliyah_haughton_official
I AM EXCITED!! Aaliyah’s makeup was always on point. I’m tickled at the thought of the names they’ll give to the products. Imagine a lipstick called One in a Million, an eyeshadow called Four Page Letter or a blush named Rock The Boat…arrrrgh the possibilities are endless!
On a side note, I’m proud to say I still remember the routine for Are You That Somebody…
What’s your favourite Aaliyah track and are you excited for this collection?
