Keeping a positive mental attitude in the face of challenges

One of the greatest developments of the past decade or so has undoubtedly been the increase in mental health awareness. Particularly in the last five years, we have begun to understand how important mental wellbeing really is.

Success in key areas like your professional life and personal relationships can hinge on maintaining a healthy outlook, so what can you do to preserve a positive mental attitude, even when life throws some hurdles in the way?

Change key behaviours

No one is immune from negative thoughts and discouragement, but you can make a conscious effort to reduce this type of thinking. How you carry yourself from day to day is crucial and making deliberate changes to your behaviour can offer some major psychological benefits.

Here are a few examples:

  • Change your language: A problem becomes a situation. A situation becomes a challenge. Finally, a challenge becomes an opportunity. Don’t say fine, instead say amazing. It sounds a bit cheesy, but shaping your language shapes the way you think.
  • Exercise: Keeping active has long been established as a solution to improving physical condition, but it does wonders for your psyche as well. Exercise has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety whilst boosting cognitive function.
  • Plans and goals: Structure, schedules and targets are a great way to keep focused, motivated and waking up ready to take on the day.
  • Surround yourself with positivity: Good friends. Inspiring role models. The right books and music. The more good stuff you engage with, the more you will absorb.

It’s only money

Money makes the world go around, but it’s also great at getting you down.

Pretty much everyone finds money tight at some point in life, the key is not worrying too much about it and planning well to keep you away from any real money troubles. Carefully managing your personal finances goes a long way to keep stresses at bay; you just need to devote some time to the boring stuff.

Getting on top of your monthly outgoings, credit cards and outstanding debts is a great starting point. From there, you can look at ways to cut your spending, start to save and set yourself up for the future.

It is, after all, only money, but getting to grips with your finances will mean one very big weight off your mind.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Another cliché, but letting the smaller stuff pass you by means you’re not letting the things that don’t matter in life get on top of you.

Perhaps someone cut you off when you were driving? Maybe someone didn’t say thank you when you held the door for them? Did you find the waiter at the restaurant a little rude?

The bottom line is, none of these things will matter by tomorrow, or maybe even a few minutes later. By letting minor annoyances get to you, you’re steadily building your stress levels throughout the day. This means by the time you’re faced with a bigger issue, you’re already ready to blow.

Whether it’s taking the moral high ground or just laughing at the situation (or should you say, opportunity?), not allowing everyday problems to grind you down will do you all sorts of favours.

The great news is you can action these ideas today and begin your journey to a brighter outlook on life. You might only need to make a few changes, or you might have to do a bit of an overhaul. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be making big strides forward by carrying a better attitude.
