I was really pleased when I heard that Shea Moisture was going to be stocked in high street giant, Boots. My previous purchases from the hair care line, had been made across the pond and I was always reluctant to pay the inflated prices independent sellers sold it for over here – not their fault I know. I do understand that they have costs to cover.
Black Castor Oil has long been hailed as a bit of a miracle worker on afro hair. It promotes hair strength, thickness and growth. Just recently, a friend sent me a photo of her two-year old daughter, who is sporting what can only be described as a lion’s mane on her head! She has so much hair, it’s insane and she swears it’s all down to the black castor oil she’s been using on her hair and scalp.
I’ve been using their popular Black Castor Oil range for a couple of months now. Free of sulphates and silicone, It claims to fortify and renew, whilst supporting healthy growth for all hair types, including chemically treated, heat styled and natural. The Shea Moisture Black Castor Oil range is extensive, however we only get a handful of the products here in the UK. Here’s a quick round-up of my thoughts on some of the products I’ve trialled:
Shampoo (£12.99/482ml): Proof that you don’t need to spend a lot on expensive brands to get the job done. This lathers up beautifully and cleanses deeply. I always wash my hair twice, before moving onto treatments and this doesn’t leave my hair feeling stripped or dry beforehand like some shampoos can.
Treatment Mask (£12.99/340ml): I leave this on my hair for a couple of hours with a plastic cap placed over my hair, finished off with a towel wrapped around my head. It deep conditions, softens and smooths my hair out so well. Great for detangling too, as it has quite a bit of slip to it. This has found itself into my repurchase pile.
Leave-in conditioner (£12.99/453ml): Simple to use, you work a generous amount of product into your hair from roots to ends, and comb through. This is particularly beneficial for weakened, fragile hair that is prone to breakage. I was also pleasantly surprised by how hydrating it is. Apart from using this all over my hair after using the treatment mask, I like to apply this to the ends of my hair on a daily basis, in the lead up to putting my hair back in braids. I also use it on Cass’ hair as we’ve now reached that stage where he hates having his hair combed. After shampooing, rubbing this into his hair allows me to comb through his ‘fro without his usual tears and tantrums.
I’d highly recommend checking the range out next time you’re in Boots (whatever your hair type) and keep an eye out for their popular 3 for 2 offer, in order to save yourself a few pennies.
