Another day, another palette. My recent influx of posts on various palettes aren’t intentional, I just have so many products piled up waiting to be tested and swatched, I’m just grabbing whatever catches my eye.
At first glance, The Balm Cosmetics may well remind you of the San Francisco based brand Benefit, who also embrace the kitsch, girly tongue in cheek packaging and product names with quirky puns. I have a few of their products and first up are my thoughts on How ‘Bout Them Apples, which is a multi-functioning lip and cheek cream palette.
It opens up to reveal a mirrored palette and six apple shaped cream stains which can be used on both cheeks and lips.
The packaging speaks for itself. The Balm are clearly a fun and flirty brand. However I do find having topless men strewn all over the palette a little off-putting to be honest. I dunno, I guess I just prefer my make up to look a little more sophisticated these days.
Packaging aside, given the price of the palette, I also expected stronger staying power. The shades apply sheerly and what I do like is that it’s pretty easy to create a natural looking flush of colour as they’re not densely pigmented at first touch, but their intensity can layered up. They can be applied with your fingers or with a stippling brush. The finish isn’t sticky either, which is a plus. The product applies smoothly but you will need to reapply as they don’t last for hours at at time . If you’re a busy bee from day to day, you may find this frustrating and prefer something longer lasting.
This is quite an expensive palette given that you only get six shades and I feel it would benefit greatly by having a fuschia pink in it. The shades featured aren’t what I’d usually wear on the lips and I think this favours paler skin tones. The overall quality is good but also comparable to similar products being sold in Boots and Superdrug which cost less than half the RRP. How ‘Bout Them Apples is quick and simple to use on the go, fits neatly into a clutch bag on a night out and is a good all rounder, if (big if) the shades included take your fancy. Personally, for me, it just doesn’t light my fire.
